I attended York University and took a course with Dr. John Radford. At the time Dr. John Radford was also the Head of the Geography Department. I am a hearing impaired student. I have permanent hearing loss and catastrophic tinnitus. The year I attended there was a strike. Prior to the York University strike Dr. John Radford would hand out course attendance sheets for the students to mark off their name. Since I am a hearing impaired student I would always sit at the front of the class. Dr. John Radford would hand me the attendance sheet and I would use my ruler from my pencil case to make neat lines on the attendance sheet which made boxes so the students could mark off their names.
Due to the circumstances surrounding the strike I needed to apply for a late withdrawal. To my complete surprise Dr. John Radford wrote at the top of my course performance summary "she was never there". I called and left a message for Dr. John Radford asking to have a copy of the attendance sheet added. Dr. John Radford ignored my request and never submitted the attendance sheet for the appeal committee. In the end, my appeal was denied because of his false misleading comment.
York University needs to clarify the behavioural standards and accountability of professors and heads of academic departments such as Dr. John Radford. York University also needs to raise awareness of these standards and accountability.
Dr. John Radford should not be permitted to participate in a Graduate Program involving critical disabilities studies as he obviously has no respect, understanding or compassion for those who have legitimate disabilities.
