I have been renting vacation condos from people for almost 18 years and have never dealt with a person like this. Before renting he sent me what I owed in writing. I paid him what he asked ASAP all in one check, but then he call me back and said he forgot to charge me for Presidents day at a holiday rate. He wanted to know if I would like to pay him the difference or if I was buttering him up because it smelled like my check was sprayed with perfume!!! I said no of course I did not want to send more money because I paid what he asked and that my check was not sprayed with perfume.
Then when we left I vacuumed, cleaned the kitchen, put the linens in the blue box and did everything he asked. I even called him early to tell him we were going and he could come clean the condo early.
After waiting for 2 weeks and at least 2 phone calls (the rental agreement said my deposit would be returned in 1 week) only $200 of my $300 security deposit was returned with a letter that said that we had left the sliding glass door .25 of an inch opened. My husband sent my son out on deck to get snow to go in the cooler but after he left I repeatedly went by this door while cleaning to admire the view. I never noticed it left open ever so slightly.
After several phone calls and unreturned messages, my husband finally talked to him. He said he was sending us $80 back because when he got his electric bill the slight opening did not affect it. My husband thought this was an insult because no damage was done. My husband told him that if he could live with it we could live without it.
After waiting another week nothing came back and no word from him, I sent several emails and messages over Facebook and finally got an email from him that he was going back on his word and would refund nothing basically because we had made him mad. He accused our threat of a bad review as extortion and said to "please tell all friends to stay away... and if such renters as you would stay away it would be a blessing. "
So just to let everyone know if you want to stay here you best study the rental agreement and everything must be perfectly as it says and he REPEATEDLY refers to the rental agreement. Know that even though it says you will get your deposit back in one week, he can take as long as he wants to return any amount. The agreement says you have $20 in quarters for laundry and your first bundle of wood is included. We kindly didn't touch any of this and left it for his next renter and our expense.
I guess this was his way of forcing us to pay that holiday rate!!!
Oh and by the way VRBO will not let you post bad reviews. They are watching their bottom line. Be careful how you us them!!!
