According to the Consumer Protection code OAC 109.4-3-05 I was entitled to an estimate of services to be performed. WET did not offer one before or after the service was completed until pressured. The scope of the service they performed was beyond what I requested or felt necessary thus trying to justify the $2700 cost.
The Attorney, Josha Stickland of Dworkin & Bernstein Co., representing WET of Fairport Harbor, OH stated: This was an emergency call, that I was offered an estimate, but declined, and that Joe and Lisa Keller had made several attempts to collect the bill. All these statements are untrue. The call to WET was initiated to remove the excess water from the indoor/outdoor carpeting and dampness from the air after the plumber had corrected the basic cause of the clear water backup. It was beyond me why 17 machines were required for a 40x20 ft space. And no explanation made sense. I signed two papers one to allow the insurance company to pay the cost of the service, and a second to charge my credit card for the cost of the service if my insurance didn't pay. I did not sign anything declining an estimate. As a matter of fact, it was of concern from the beginning. There were no collection efforts by Lisa or Joe Keller. It was over a week later that actual cost of $2700 was given to me, I immediately addressed my concerns verbally and by correspondence, then closed my credit card so nothing could be charged to my account. As an aside, I informed the representative at least twice, insurance wouldn't cover the cost.
WEB is well represented on the internet. There is a a+ rating from the BBB, but it is for WET in Colorado, not Fairport Harbor. As a matter of interest, I contacted the BBB in Cleveland (after the fact) and discovered there actually was no listing on BBB Cleveland for WET in Fairport. Also I was informed by another Angie's List client, that Angie's list receives a commission on any referrals.
In my correspondence, I offered to negotiate for a fairer price, but the only response I received was from Mr. Strickland, their attorney, with a letter full of non-factural information. The business practices I experienced with WET were unfair and deceiptful, and it is my hope that others don't benefit from similar of tactics.
