I received a call on my cell phone today asking to confirm my address because there was a lawsuit against me, and the police was going to my home or business to serve me. They did not give me any more information, except a case number and a telephone number from the attorney's office.
I called the number and it was a Bail Bond office. I was transferred to the "detective" who told me I owed $3500 on a creditcard and they were willing to settle for $2500. I questioned why I never got any correspondence, and they said they were not obligated to search for me. They said they sent 1 letter, which returned as undeliverable mail, and that I should be aware of what I owed and who I owed to.
I got from them their name and website. I requested a copy of the paperwork they had stating I owed anybody. They refused to give it to me. They said I would receive everything 90 days after payment, only if my payment went through. I questioned why it was not on my credit report, and they said I was lucky it didn't make it there, but if I didn't pay, it would. I asked for time to investigate longer. They refused and said that if I did not pay immediately, they could not stop the police from going to my door, and that I would have to pay for attorney fees and all.
I did not pay. Asked them to send me the paperwork, since now they had my correct address, and said I would pay the full amount, if I owed the money. The guy was upset and hung up,
It so happen that the creditcard they were charging me as debit, is actually on my credit report as paid in full.
Somehow, they got my info and were very persistent. The first call scarred me, because mentioned a lawsuit and an action against my name. That could have been anything.
I have reported to the police and Attorney's General Office - Fraud Department.
