Within the next few weeks, I will not be a student at Walden University. As an institution of advance learning their administrative business practices are inefficient and unprofessional. I have always thought that once an educational institution's main focus is on increasing profit margins and less so on the welfare of its students, and the quality of its pedagogy then there is bound to be a conflict of interest.
The university's "unethical" practice to recruit as many students with a failure to explain the financial aid process in details prior to and even during enrollment is deceptive. This is particularly so for international students whose country of origin financials aid's practices and rules differ from that of the United States. Upon self-discovery of the latter, rather than the university trying to help me in a professional manner, I was made to feel ignorant and the blame was cast solely on me for not having the initial detailed information from the university. This is despite my many attempts to obtain the same. Each time I attempted, I am transferred to another department of which people are either unaware of what I am relating or I am told my information lacks credibility.
Then there are the insensitive, rude undertone emails and telephone conversations that reflect the "after the fact" limited information. If I was that ignorant, would I have become a student of higher learning in the first replace as suggested by the reactions of the university's staff? At one point I was not given an academic advisor because the university was not aware that they had not given me one following the departure of the previous academic advisor. Who incidentally had lacked advising and professionalism skills, small wonder she departed from the university. As if to punish me for some unknown crime, fate caused me to self-appoint a new an equally ineffective academic advisor. What behooves me is that these people have master's and doctoral degrees, many from Walden university. Yet they lack basic common sense as well as advanced thinking skills that ought to be reflective of their educational attainment and maturity.
Did I also mentioned that when a person telephones the university, you are advised and reminded that calls are monitored for "quality [guarantee]purposes, " a script that is embedded in the psychic of the university's staff and that is all there is to that action. Also, the university request that you complete these survey so that "we can improve the delivery of our services," really,? That is so ironic! An educational institution cannot be teaching its students how to act professionally responsible while its administrative and academic support staff are being inefficient, incompetent, and unprofessional. This spells, hypocrisy and deception, therefore I do not want to be connected with an institution that engages in not only such practices but also bias and discrimination. I believe that good reputation is still important so please, please reconsider carefully before choosing Walden University, I had to learn the hard way after receiving initial warnings. Please do not make the same mistake as I did.
I had fully intended to continue at Walden University for my doctoral program until I had the unfortunate occurance of a car accident. I did not continue my classwork since I was having issues due to memory and concentration. I had documentation of the car accident and I showed due cause to discontinue going to school.
Walden University reviewed my documentation and now I still owe over $700 dollars. I discontinued the second week of a class and I was still charged for the class. I finally withdrew from the doctoral program.
I sent the proper documentation to obtain a waiver and a waiver was not given. I was told it was policy. It does not matter what happens in a persons life. It is just policy, no matter what.
This is a school that purports wanting to 'affect positive social change'. This is not affecting positive social change. This is affecting the botton line which is profit.
I am not able to show to any employer my informal or formal transcripts. Walden is keeping them from me. Until I pay what I owe in full I will not be able to show what classes I took at Walden University. This is unacceptable and unethical. I had shown documentation. This was not quitting on a whim. It was a car accident.
I would recommend that noone go to Walden University unless they are able to pay the fees in full without loans. It is a for profit university with unethical conduct unbecoming of an educational institution.
Personal Recommendations:
Look into a local college instead and then get a 2 or 4 year degree in something that is highly needed by society Nursing, Hospital jobs, etc. By the way, I am a psychology professional. I do not make statements lightly. I would rather make positive statements. I do not relish making negative statements. I just want to warn potential students. If I can affect positive social change by warning others, I will.
Before I tear apart this university, I would like to mention the few good things about it. Walden University is a great alternative to the traditional brick and mortar schools when it comes to furthering your education. Walden University provides a convenient learning method for busy adults aiming to balance work and family life while advancing a degree. Walden has done a great job of providing students with experienced, qualified instructors who genuinely invest in teaching and provide constructive feedback throughout the program courses.
Here's where the university screws up:
I chose to pursue a second degree program with Walden University, and I am beginning to wish that I had not. Walden University has wonderful graduate programs and instructiors on top of affordability, which pushed to re-enroll, but to mention how poorly the financial aid office runs would not serve anything justice. I understand that every university has one issue or another, but Walden does not treat it's students as students as well as paying customers.
I was fed up with the school during my enrollment from 2011-2013, and now that I'm there for 2014-2016, I am trying to determine how I will survive past the aggrevation with their financial aid office. The financial office is now worse than it was the last time I attended. The financial aid teams are the most incompetent people to ever service you. They never have a clue what is going on with your account. They might as well have the minions from Despicable Me working there. Students might actually receive results at that point.
The financial aid tosses around more bull to students about the awarding and disbursing of their loans. My term has begin in the summer. I applied and was approved for a graduate plus loan almost two weeks before my term begin. I am now in my third week of my course for this term, and why have I not received awarding of my graduate plus loan yet let alone disbursement.
My stafford loan disbursed already, and I will probably see Jesus first before I receive the refund for that one. I just don't understand this school's "So-Called" processes for doing anything. A couple of financial aid reps told me to allow up to 14 days for awarding from the MPN (master promissory note). I am way past my 14 days. The financial aid department received my first MPN on 6/23. They claimed they were not sure if they could use that one so I sent in a new MPN on 6/9. After sending the 6/9 promissory note, I am told to allow up to 14 days from this date. This is exhausting and ridiculous. I just want my plus loan to disburse. Why is it such a hassle to award this?? It doesn't make sense.
I completed my first degree with Walden University less than a year ago. With this being said, I know that it should not take up to 14 days just to award the loan. I've received graduate plus loans in other terms from 2011-2013.
****The process went like this:
Early Monday: Applied/Approved
Tuesday: Walden notified..received award in student portal..I accepted.
Wednesday: Plus Loan sent to lender
Friday: Plus Loan disbursed
Within the following week, my account went back to zero, and my refund began to process. How in the world am I supposed to believe that it takes up to 14 days to award a graduate plus loan. This university is really beginning these scholar students for idiots these days, and it's killing me. It is not ok to stall students money this way. I don't know if they get more interest and perks the longer they mess around or what the deal is, but it is not ok. Something needs to change ASAP. I could acquire student loan debt somewhere else for what I have to go through at Walden University just to obtain a graduate plus loan that I am already approved for. It's just not right.
My advice to other students looking to pursue online education to complete their education goals, I'd say go somewhere else to spend your money. Perhaps after you realize you need a graduate plus loan you can receive it in a timely manner to cover the remained of your education expenses.
