Let’s face it. It probably wasn’t the smartest hiring an SEO company on a whim like I did. Someone introduced me to Vizion Interactive and one of their sales guys. They were charming and brought a lot of praise from a colleague.
We started up with them for about $5k a month in the hopes that they would be able to drive a significant amount of traffic to our website. Our other websites were doing just fine with what we did, but we decided to use them to optimize those as well. Out of four web properties, it started off with three that were doing well enough to turn a profit and one we thought could do extraordinarily well.
This is the important part, because we already had three that were doing well. Going into this I knew nothing about SEO or online marketing. I told Vizion this up front and told them that I was entrusting the livelihood of my company into their hands.
I know that was a big mistake. What happened next was a nightmare.
Two months into the project I started to notice that our revenues were actually down. I wanted to first attribute it to being the time of the year. Perhaps people weren’t seeking out what we had to offer as much. I decided to just look around see what I could find. I knew we showed up on Google for a few different phrases which brought us traffic.
When I typed them into Google, I couldn’t find us on the first page. I couldn’t find us on the second page. I couldn’t find us on the third page. I couldn’t find us on the fourth page. I found us on the fifth page.
Before that, we were on the first page.
I checked the keywords they said they were targeting for our new website.
I couldn’t find us on the first page. I couldn’t find us on the second page. I couldn’t find us on the third page. I couldn’t find us on the fourth page. I couldn’t find us at all.
I had my IT guy check out our analytics and sure enough our traffic was down across the board. I explained this concern to our rep at Vizion and they said that it was just a pattern going on with some animal. I didn’t really know enough, but I told them that they needed to sort it out because it was starting to affect our overall business. We were now just breaking even, but that was before the $5k Vizion would take from us.
Into our third month we were now starting to lose money. We were nowhere on Google. We had some minor traffic in Bing, but you can’t really do business in Bing. Our main source of revenue was starting to dwindle and I couldn’t really find a way to bring it back with them. I asked them to suspend the payments until they were able to actually fix things and bring us back our original amount of business, but they told us that they were unable to work for free. According to them it was an unfair and insulting request.
It was around this time I was introduced to Mark Jackson. To be blunt he was very rude and abrasive. He completely rubbed me the wrong way during our first encounter. I would think with how much I was spending I should expect to see some results, but Mr. Jackson was more concerned with the paycheck than he was about the results we should be receiving.
So by the end of the third month we were essentially being told to continue to pay, honor our agreement, and not worry about the fact that their “SEO” practices had already managed to do more damage than they did help. On the bright side, they managed to move one of our keywords up one position on the third page from where it was. So I guess I had that going for me, so I should be happy.
I guess the moral of this story, and the point I really want to let people know is that this company will make a lot of promises they are unable to keep. They are also going to hold you to the financial side of the deal despite being able to hold up their end of the deal. If you sign up with this scam artist, you’re going to find yourself in that situation of being threatened by their legal team if you refuse to pay. They will have a grasp of you and they can either let go after you have paid them or they can strangle your business.
