As a parent you try to make the best choices for your kids. When our son was having a problem with drinking and was experiencing severe depression we sent him to Visions Adolescent Treatment Center. We thought it was a sound choice but now I regret it. We chose Visions because they have been around for awhile, becuase they talked up their family therapy component, because a therapist friend had heard of them, and because they told us he would have individual therapy with a licensed provider. They require a 45 days minimum stay and now I wish we hadn't asked our son to endure the full stay.
He had wanted to leave early, but they told us that was a typical response, so we asked him to stick it out. When my son talks about his experience (he is now talking openly with us) it simply makes me angry that we wasted all the resources, mainly, the time. Maybe Visions is good with kids who are strictly dealing with a drug problem but our son tells us he always felt like an outsider and that the emphasis was on groups and fitting into the group. He felt like the focus was on the drinking and that his depression was minimized. Though we were told that he would receive at least 3 individual counselling sessions a week, he says that he only received a couple of individual sessions with a licensed therapist during the length of his stay and that most of his ""sessions"" were with the program staff.
He also says that he never saw half the people listed on the website. This all correllates as when we asked about the results of his psychological assessments, that were supposedly part of the standard program, we never really got a firm response. Also, we participated in a couple of family sessions, which were always underwhelming to me, but I was trying to be supportive to my son. In hindsight I should have trusted my instincts rather than the facility staff. I recommend that you do your homework and confirm what you are actually getting before you make a decision.
