My family recently moved my 89 year old mother from her home in Roy to an assisted living center. In the process of doing so it was necessary to have her home security system disconnected. When I attempted to do this, I discovered that she had been paying for two systems from different companies. When I questioned her about it she told me the following.
On January 30, 2014 a man knocked on her door claiming to be with her current home security firm Vivent. He told her he needed to check the batteries in her system. She allowed him to come in and after looking at her system he told her it would need to be replaced. He removed her system and installed a new one leaving the old one behind. He had her sign some papers (she has macular degeneration and could not have read the paperwork) and he left.
A few days later mom got a call from Vision Security System asking her if she realized she had signed up with a new company. She told them she was not aware of that and went on to tell them that the technician had claimed to be with her current company. As mom remembers it, Vision apologized and claimed they would contact Vivent and have them discontinue the service if she agreed to remain with Vision.
Mom went along thinking that Vision had taken care of everything with Vivent and she did not realize she was being charged by both Vivent and Vision until I questioned her about it a few weeks ago.
Vision should admit they scammed my mother and return her money of $48.99 per month from February – August.
I was lied to several times during the Sales Visit. I only signed after I had read the contract carefully, had them make a change to it and thought there was verbal agreement between me, the Sales Rep, and the Corporate handler about the reason behind the change. Do not listen to anything they say, they are not trustworthy.
1) I refused to sign the agreement unless the clause for a 5 year term was removed. I spoke with the Sales Rep, and someone on the phone. A section was removed from the contract, and I didn't see any other places that it referred to this. When I tried to cancel the service 8 months later, they said there was another clause elsewhere in the contract and that I was obliged to pay them.
2) I was promised that the monthly service fee was tax deductible, and that they would be sending me the tax reporting so that I could deduct it. Again, I never received anything. When I called and asked about it I was told that it wasn't possible for them to know if this was a tax deductible service or not.
