Robert Vaughan of Ventana Landscape contacted me, a San Diego based interior designer and garden designer, to ask if we could perhaps collaborate on future projects togethet. He told me that he was licensed, well educated in horticulture and landscape construction, had a nice portfolio to show me and wanted to exclusively work with an experienced designer. We met, spent several hours together going over what my standards are for recommending contractors and I looked at his portfolio. Robert then proceeded to bend my ear about how he had a heartatack, his wife divorced him an he has been struggling since the economy shifted. I believed him and I felt sorry for him.
I decided to intrdouce Robert to a close friend and client for a front yard landscape and hardscape project that I designed. My client interviewed Robert and decided Robert was a good guy and capable to do the work.
My client gave Robert the opportunity to bring my designs to fruition And wrote him a substantial check for deposit upon Robert's request.
Robert started the project the very best day right after he cashed the deposit check which was half of the project price ($5,000) The next day his non documented workers started demo on the front yard which included tearing out the existing lawn, landscape and driveway concrete. Quite a mess. This mess sat for three weeks before it was finally removed. Robert was contacted each day without further action Except for when he was requesting for more money for materials, etc.. Which my client trusted and gave him in the tune of over $11,000. However when I tried to reach Robert he was in the dentist chair getting his teeth worked on or he was in Santa Cruz visiting relatives for the weekend. He was not working on my clients project!! Weeks and weeks went by with little to zero progress. Weeks turned into three months! My client and I have tried to reach Robert each and everyday... No results, only excuses as to why he can't be there or why his workers aren't there. THREE MONTHS have gone by with little to zero results! We have a torn up front landscape with zero results for prepaying Robert Vaughan a little over $11,000. total in cash with only about $3,000 in demo and a partial cinder block seating wall to show for it.
Since this situation we have discovered that Robert Vaughan's contractors license is actually suspended / not valid and he has done this very same scam to several other San Diego homeowners. He askes for a huge deposit upfront, destroys the property, months pass leaving it in that condition, hires different laborers and then only pays them partial what he owes, avoids phone calls from the homeowners, and obviously doesn't deliver the prepaid for materials or finishes the project. Whats even worse is that his laborers / workers visit my clients property daily simply hoping to run into Robert with the goal of getting paid for laborious services rendered in which he hired them to do!
Pathetic! This seems to be his "scam"... He askes for huge deposits upfront but then takes off with the clients money.
This is NOT acceptable!!!
