I have been with this company for 5 months and here are the issues I have already had to deal with. We plan on ending the account in the next couple of months once we find what bank or credit union we want to use:
When we first set up our account we had to make a $25 deposite to hold account; and my wife ordered some checks for $5 dollars to come out of the $25 funds available. In the meantime before we had our automatic deposit coming in, we spent some of the $25 available and only had $2.50 in our account. We forgot about the $5 check purchase, which the payment tried to come in. USAA did not cover the $2.50 we were short, which instead they returned the charge of $5 and charged us a $29 dollar fee. USAA let this happen 3 times before we noticed. So the $5 never got covered and we were charged $87 dollars. USAA defended themselves by saying we didnot have overdraft protection set up. USAA said they would cover some fees, but it depended on the amount of the charge and account history ($2.50 - give me a break).
At a later date, I called in and set up overdraft protection linking to a credit card. A month later we had something bounce and we called in to inquire why our overdraft protection did not protect. USAA claimed that the overdraft protection was never set up. They did credit the overdraft fee, set up overdraft protection, and show me how I could verify that it was legitamently set up.
We had trouble from another time when we deposited a check, but the check did not post at the correct time. We deposited the check to save a overdraft fee, but the overdraft still hit to the incorrect posting. USAA did credit the overdraft fee and appologise for the mistake.
Recently what happened and what was the straw that broke the camels back. We had a power bill hit the day before we got paid. USAA charged us a $29 fee and then rejected the power bill the next day when we had over a thousand in our account. I called customer service to inquire if USAA will cover anything. They again told me it depended on the amount. I ask what that amount was, but they could not tell me because they had the right to reject it if they wanted to. Well I have the right to put my trust in another company. I know this is my responsibility to have the funds I use, but most banks will cover you for a little amount. I guess USAA does not have this protection for all.
USAA has great customer service, but there on-line banking is the same as many banks. I don't understand how banks have the right to post things one way and then repost in another way. This is misleading and does not show real events. It just shows the events they want you to see.
I have been a USAA menber for 49 years (longer than their Chairman) and currently have all of my seven insurance policies with them I recently had a minor fender bender while driving a rental car. I repaired the minor ($400) damage to the rental with my own money. The other vehicle had $2000 in damage which USAA is refusing to pay, claiming that Hertz should pay it.
Kevin O'Grady - claims director - even chastised me for paying for the damage to the rental out of my own pocket! I joined USAA on my way to Vietnam in 1968. I deserve better treatment than this!!
April 29, 2015 my car was hit by a USAA insured driver. It happened at a 4-way intersection with 3 stop signs. I had no stop sign so I had the right of way. The USAA insured driver had a stop sign. Even though there was traffic coming from my direction, he ignored the traffic, crossed the road and hit my car. Page 14 of the MD traffic laws says "When you come to a stop sign, you must make a complete stop at the stop line. Before starting, you must yield the right-of-way to other vehicles pedestrians. You may not proceed until it is safe to do so and until the way is clear to completely pass through the intersection."
Clearly it wasn't safe to cross the road at the time but he ignored the traffic laws. May 26, 2015 I received a denied letter from USAA saying I "contributed to the accident" and that I "struck his vehicle". It also said “Our vehicle had almost completely crossed the intersection.” This is opposite from what the laws shown above. I didn't expect to get this letter at all. In addition I didn’t expect to see those words. It is unbelievable how USAA and its insured manipulate and wangle this case.
If anyone at USAA is reading this and is concerned with the companies online reputation, please read, and if you want to try and make this right go ahead and contact me. I do plan on posting this on multiple websites so the search engines get a nice grip on it and it ultimately will rise to the top when people do their research when choosing a bank.
For those of you who are tired and frustrated with these guys and their thug tactics, please share this article or any of the articles that you find relevant to your situation.
These guys are a bunch of shady scum buckets! They take your money and place it on hold for 8 days without even telling you, which is what happened today on my mobile app. I deposit 1 check every month from the same person / same checking account and every single check is good yet USAA decides to put the money on hold per their "fraudulent policy."
Another person made mention of the following which I also can confirm is true.
"I looked up the relevant Federal Reserve guidelines, and because of the way the bank was arranged, unfortunately, everything they were doing was perfectly legal. But they doesn't make it right. I am pretty sure that they are taking the deposited money holding it for 5 days and investing it in 24-hour turnaround bonds with the Treasury. In today's computerized banking system it does not take five days to move money between domestic banks. I would highly recommend taking your business somewhere else if you are looking for an online bank where you can have access to your money."
USAA has just bought themselves a serious S$^it storm coming down the pipe from me. They should really learn who their clients are and be more aware of the repercussions that this type of treatment can have. Deposit holds are a bunch of BS once the account has matured and hasn’t bounced any checks!
Going to the garage now to go get my massive Sh^T stirring spoon. Looks like we are going to have to take some serious action, inside of just talking about it. After they are done investigating and being investigated from my case they will end of loosing way more money than what the hold amount was originally. It costs me nothing, but in sheer time/cost factor/investigation from various consumer groups, they are going to be tied up for way longer than my money is.
I've called them already tonight and will give them one more chance tomorrow to try and do the right thing.
Not impressed with @USAA or @GerberCollision in Scottsdale, Arizona - Raintree Drive location - My auto insurance company @USAA uses them for one of their approved repair facilities. I took my vehicle there for a repair estimate. The appraiser wrote an estimate for a "cloth" interior door panel - to repair, not replace. My interior door panel is black leather and vinyl. @USAA approved and paid this incorrect estimate. When I took my vehicle to my own shop they laughed and said "the estimate is incorrect and we are not going to deal with it, there are only a few of this vehicle's correct interior door trim panels in the USA ( BMW) and they cost around $650.00." I called @USAA yesterday and explained that Gerber wrote an incorrect estimate and explained the situation. @USAA was RUDE and said that I have to purchase the correct part and fax them a supplemental estimate for their review and approval.Well, @USAA incorrectly reviewed, approved, and paid for a $125.00 cloth interior door trim panel and did not notice that my BMW is black leather/vinyl. Beware of @Gerber Collision for writing low ball estimates - it appears that mine was written this way to force me to have my repairs done at Gerber. This is not my first problem as an insured with USAA, but it will be my last as I will no longer insure with them - after 27 years. Lisa, AZ.
I recently joined USAA to take advantage of the supposed benefits to military members. I have found that you must be careful when dealing with USAA. My wife deposited her paycheck at a UPS store, as directed by USAA, and found that USAA will not release those funds for a week. Direct deposit is fine, but if you have a physical check, they claim that they must get the money from the bank it is drawn on before they will release your funds. When we consider this major issue with USAA, we find that many local credit unions offer the same or better banking and lending opportunities. So, for now, an entire paycheck is on hold for a week. Potential customers beware!!
