I simply went to change my address. I typed in USPS Change of Address and got a site called: US Postal® Address Change - Change of Address Online
Seeing how it said US Postal service I thought I was in the right place. It was, after all, the first item in the list on Google (goes to show that google does NOTHING to help prevent fraud). I began filling out the order and when I got to the payment section I thought it was a bit strange. I just figured that the post office needed money since they are having real trouble. Anyways, after entering my credit card info (I had not submitted the order yet), I decided to check. After seeing that it was a fraud I closed the window, but the order went through anyways. I just now noticed the $20 charge on my card for a service I never authorized or received.
I tried contacting the company but they say I need an order number to get a refund. I got no such number because I had cancelled the order...or so I thought. Now I am contacting the bank/dispute department to dispute the charge and I'm cancelling the card so they don't add any more charges. Why does no govt. agency do anything about obvious fraud sites that have many complaints?
I googled "USPS change of address" and landed on https://www.change-of-address-online.com/change-of-address.php?gclid=CISe_be17r4CFXRo7Aodlx4AEQ I (foolishly) thought it was a USPS (United States Postal Service) website, for at the top of the web page it says "Postal Change of Address Online: Safe & Secure USPS (r) change of mailing address form online." Filled out the form, paid $20 with my credit card. A few hours later, I called my post office to ask about the advantages of filing for an individual vs family address change. I mentioned the $20 fee and was told, "USPS charges only $1. That was not our site."
Looking at my address change confirmation, I saw that it came from USA Filing Services. I looked for this outfit online. Could not find a phone number. Finally found an address and googled that: 1335 Main St., Cincinati, OH 45202. The name that popped up with that was "Original Tax Place." I called the number provided by Google (513-744-9000). I asked the person who asnwered, "Is this The Original Tax Place." "Yes," he said. "Is this also USA Filing Services." And he responded, "How did you get this number?" I told him it wasn't easy. Anyway, I managed to get a refund, telling the person that I had called my credit card, concerned that the business was fraudulent.
This company puts flyers at the post office designating that they are the ""preferred"" third party vendor that the post office uses to file change of address reports now. The official flyer makes it seem like it is sanctioned by the postal service
They charge $20 for this service and all they do is provide a printed form that you must then mail to the postal service anyway. Thinking this was what I was required to do now since everything is online, I signed up on my phone (which is hard to read) and then mailed the piece of paper when I was able to get to a computer. After 3 weeks I found that the USPS had not recorded any change of address anyway. So this was just a scam.
Had I had a computer at the place I was staying trying to forward mail from, I would have seen that the U.S. postal service has an online form for that and they charge you $1.05 for the same service.
The company says they will gladly refund your money within 30 days if you decide to cancel. It took me several emails and a threat to contact the credit card company to even get a response, which was the most sarcastic response I have ever read from a ""customer service"" rep.
Do not be fooled!! You do not need third party companies to process changes of address for anything any more.
