When seeing Dr. Okotie, a urologist, he stated to me he thought I would be a good canadite for a bladder sling because of my symptoms and issues. He did further tests and it was determined that would be the best fix for my issues.
He did fail to mention possible side effects or issues that may arise from this surgery.
Upon going in for the surgery all seemed well. And I discharged a small amount of urine as soon as I woke up in the post op room. That was the last time in a while I was able to release any kind of urine on my own.
My surgery was Monday and when I went into the office Tuesday to get packing taken out I informed them that I still had not urinated on my own since the few drops in Post Op. They told me it is ok, drink more fluids and be patient. If I still was having issues call them.
Wednesday morning I woke up early in so much pain because I still had not urinated. I attempted to go and sat on the toilet for hours that night crying. I called the number the hospital provided to reach the doctor. He told me to go immediately to the doctors office where the nursing staff will insert a catheter and help me.
After going in they relieved me and stated I had over 1100cc and it was probably going up into my kidneys. They placed a perminate catheter in me with a huge bag, and showed me how to empty the bag. Then they told me I needed to go to his St. Vincent office 2 days later (Friday) to get it removed and I should be able to urinate by myself that day.
Friday I go in and they remove it. Then proceed to give me glass after glass of water. Scanned my bladder said yes you are full, but again I am still unable to urinate. Keep in mind I was urinating perfectly fine prior to this surgery. So the nurse there was really horible. She handed me a bag of catheters and lube and said make sure you aim in the right hole, and proceeded to walk me out the front door.
Tuesday the following week, I went back to his office at Community Hospital, where I finally saw him. I informed him at this time I was able to pass a few drops but that was it. He proceeded in telling me he knew he messed up and got it too tight. He needed to go back in as soon as we could to "cut" a small insision in the sling allowing it to relax some and allow me to urinate.
The surgery was done the following week. So I had to catheter myself for 2 weeks. At which time the 2nd surgery was performed I was begining to bleed at the entery sight of the urethra, which he stated was due to all the cathing. Right after the surgery I was able to urinate completely and it felt amazing!
Now I am faced with the hospital bills not just for the first surgery but the 2nd one. This 2nd surgery would never had to be done had he done the first one right. But now they expect me to pay for his mistake. I even asked the hospital to look into it. They came back and said none of the hospital staff was at fault so I needed to pay the hospital bills.
I just want this doctor to pay for the 2nd surgery completely since he admits he messed up. He has insurance to cover things like this, but instead he wants me to find all that money and say it is all ok. It isn't. And I am still not sure I am totally ok, I still have all kinds of pains and issues are starting to reappear.
