I had signed up with Progressive auto insurance in February 2014 after I bought a new house and needed auto insurance. The sales representative indicated that my home insurance rates would be lower if I bundled the two services, so there I was.
At the time, the sales representative also offered the Snapshot device as a way to lower my auto insurance rates. I was assured that if I qualified for a discount my rates would go down, otherwise they would remain the same. I assumed that the discount was a scam, but agreed anyway since I figured what the harm.
During the first 6 months of service my bill was approximately $65 a month for 2 vehicles. This was agreed upfront and I was completely ok with this amount. Around month 5, I was told the snapshot collected enough information, I was getting 0% discount, and I needed to send the device back; again 100% ok and expected as part of the scam.
The part I have problems with is that come month 7 I received the renewal letter and the bill has increased to $95 per month; over a 30% increase in a single 6 month period with the company. This goes against everything advertised about the product and is fradulent activity on their part.
I expect nothing back from this monolythic service provider. Just wanted to make sure everyone knows to beware of this device, they will most certainly jack up your rates if you stop quicker than they like, or if you drive during normal rush hours.
I decided to participate in Progreesive snapshot program. I drive 20 miles a week and do not drive at night or rush hour. I live in Pittsburgh with extreme hills. The snapshot program registers hard braking(defined by decreasin speed more than 7 ft per second). What they do not tell you that it is not dependant on brakeing but the reduction in speed. I rarely drive my car and live on extreme hills. The hills are steep enough to decrtease my speed by mnore than 7 feet per second. I get 3 beeps just leaving my neighborhood. I drive my car like a old lady and the device beeps every time I deaccelerate going up thse hills. I talked to Progressive and their solution was to give it ges when slowing down up these hills. This is rediculous. I am sure this device would work on flat roads but not where I live. After 3 months I disconnected the device. To get a reduction you need to have under 10 fast stops per 100 miles. I had 50. Now I worry that they will raise my rates. Be aware of this. In the past year I drove 2000 miles. They told me that that does not qualify me for any discounts. I like Prgressive but if they raised my insurance this year(before I installed the snapshot device). by $6 dollars a month. I have had no accidents or tickets in 20 years. They said that my Insurance went up because of the area I live. It is too bad that they do not give discounts for low mileage. If they raise my rate I will insure my vehicle elsewhere.
