This post serves as an alert regarding a craigslist scammer named Steve Smith. I purchased a used automotive lift from Mr. Smith earlier this year and paid Mr. Smith for the installation. I also advanced Mr. Smith money for special bolts used to secure the lift to the floor of my garage. When Mr. Smith delivered the lift it was missing a number of parts. Furthermore, he never returned to install the lift and absconded with the money that I advanced for the bolts.
When I made attempts to contact Mr. Smith regarding the bolts and the install he provided one inconsistent excuse after another all of which turned out to be untrue. Specifically, he claimed he couldn't get the bolts (they were available at a bolt store in Lansing) Then he claimed that he had the bolts but that he didn't have a sitter to watch his kids on the day of the scheduled install. Later he again claimed that he didn't have the bolts. He was even so unconscionable as to claim his mother was in the hospital then died and was being burried "down south" to further his scam (He later admitted that his mother was alive and well, and changed his story to claim it was his step mother who died.) Mr. Smith even gave a fradulent drivers' license number on the receipt he provided...this was verified when he used his real drivers' license number to cash the check.
Initially he was agreeable to refunding part of my money, but then he disappeared before repaying a cent. Following my failed attempts to resolve this matter with Mr. Smith, I filed a legal action against Mr. Smith. However, he has made every effort to dodge the process server.
Mr. Smith is 50 years old, approximately 6 feet tall, obese with short graying hair. He drives a 1993 Blue Ford F-150 pickup truck. Hopefully by posting this alert others will avoid being scammed by Mr. Smith. He may be trying to sell equipment or handyman services in the Lansing / Dewitt Michigan Area.
If you have also been a victim of Steve Smith's scams please feel free to respond to this post, as I will glady provide you with any information that I can to help you bring this individual to justice.
