A Post woman has been accused of running a puppy mill, leaving sixty dogs neglected.
A warrant identifies Shelia Proctor as the owner of these animals. There were sixty dogs, and the condition of the home were labeled as unbearable by Sheriff Terry Morgan.
"It was so bad when we got into the house that when the Animal Rescue Center and the Animal Control guy had to wear masks and use gloves," Morgan said.
Those who survived, came a long way. Deputies report Proctor transported the animals in a small mobile home with no air conditioning for the 22-hour drive. Two of the animals died, and others were injured. Justice of the Peace Gordon Terry awards the dogs to the Post Animal Rescue Center, finding they were cruelly treated.
"There is an appeal process, they have ten days to appeal this. The judge set an appeal price if the woman elects to appeal this. Nothing can happen to the dogs for ten days, if they haven't appealed this the dogs will be adopted by the Post Animal Rescue Center," Morgan said.
On Proctor's website she advocates against animal abuse saying to always keep your pet loved and groomed.
"We've lost six of the dogs since we've seized the dogs: three adults and three babies. We're pursuing criminal charges on this lady. She's no longer in the state, we don't think, Morgan said."
So if you're looking for a new puppy, Morgan advises to be extremely cautious and meet them in person beforehand.
Animal cruelty is a class A misdemeanor. It carries a maximum sentence of one year in jail and up to a 4,000 dollar fine.
