A knock on our private residency door with a "No Soliciting" sign and when we opened the door a young lady, likely a college student, who was wearing a lanyard and badge identifying her as working for SFE Energy began to introduce herself. She explained that the company is a "family owned company" (how nice and sweet), and that if she, "could see one of (our) BGE bills, (she) could explain how we could save money switching to SFE".

Alarms went off in our heads as we asked her to leave. She then went on, obviously trying to get us to feel sorry for her, "But if I don't get you signed up today, I'll just have to return tomorrow during the snow storm to do this." Oh, where is my violin? We again asked her to leave. She proceeded to try yet another tactic by telling us that we could be, "making a big mistake". Oh, so now she is throwing vague threats at us. I then said, "You are trespassing on our property. You can leave Now!" She didn't budge, but she tried one more time. My wife then said, "We are not interested, now you can leave. Go Away!" She threw a few rude comments at us that I will not repeat before she turned and left.

Once she left and we closed the door, we did a quick Google search and found several Scam Warnings about SFE. We then contacted BGE who told us we did the correct thing. They told us they are contacting their "Security Department" who will contact SFE and "Warn them about their soliciting procedures." BGE confirmed that no one should be soliciting us "on behalf of" BGE except BGE Personel. Also, we were told by BGE that "at no time should any solicitor be shown your bill, nor should we grant them access into our home".

If you show your utility bill to anyone, especially a fraudulant solicitor, you are giving them your account information that they can use to sign you up, without a signature, on a potentially expensive service! Inviting them into your home is dangerous due to the fact that they can gather much information about your home, security system, and other critical information that can lead to other illegal activity. No legitimate representative of any company is ever permitted to enter a home, that is a law in many states.

I printed out the "Ripoff Alert" report and, on my way to a class at the community college, saw this young lady on a neighbors porch. I parked my truck and walked onto the neighbors porch to show the report and notify her that I am on to her scam. She angrily (understandable) told me I was, "breaking the law" and she threatened to call the police. I invited her to do so and explained that "all the police in the area, as well as all my neighbors, know who I am and they all know I don't start trouble, I stop it". (I ran for office in 2010 and most of my neighborhood, and all the police in the area, supported me whether they were Democrat or Republican, because they know they can trust me.)

She proceeded to alegedly call the police. As she began to describe me, I interupted and told her my name, address, age, eye and hair color, height and weight. She hung up the phone with the police and then told me not to go anywhere. I said I'll wait as long as she does. She called her supervisor and as she told him what was happening and that she, "called the cops just like I did on another guy who got in big trouble for doing this to me". Her supervisor apparently told her to leave me and move on because she started tearing up and walked away.

I left all my information with my neighbor and asked him to give it to the Officer(s) who show up, if they do. I explained that they all know me and know how to contact me if they really were called and if they need to speak with me.

Sorry for the long description. I just want others to be aware of what to do, how to protect themselves and what to do if you spot a Scam Artist. Have a great day!

SFE energy scam

Similarly to this post, I answered a knock on my door and greeted two people who claimed to work for SFE Energy,

They were very rude/annoying, but not both of them. I should say, she was.

I repeatedly asked them to leave, but they didn’t, so I eventually called PECO and the police.

I later found them a few doors down from me, and I asked to see and copy their IDs. The woman directed me to the man’s ID. I read that his name is Matthew Wood, RFM540, but she refused to let me see hers or to take her picture. She merely tossed Matthew under the bus, so to speak.

If you’re trying to get me to give SFE Electric some of my money for something, this method is not very convincing!

If possible, I would like to know two things – What’s up with this, and how can I get you to leave me alone?

Are there any non-whiners out there

So frustrating no one offers any objective information about this company and if they actually have saved anybody any money, opposed to just whining about crappy sales reps. The woman that approached us did none of the things people are saying they experienced to misrepresent the company. Why people call what they think is a poor sales approach a "scam" is beyond me and totally useless information. All I know is they appear to be a legit company and is accredited with the BBB. Does anybody have any useful information out there, like... my bill is lower, my bill is higher, my bill is the same, there were hidden fees??

SFE scam

last fall, we were roped into this, even after talking to our natural gas company, who said they had a good reputation. Yet almost a year later and our bills are still about $30 a month higher, instead of just the $30. I've had it, went to their site and informed that they could consider my account canceled in Dec, when the year is up, and that IF I saw that they were still adding to my normal bill, I'd contact CA. PUC and everyone else I can, including the local news channel. I also filed a report with RIPOFF and hope that no one else gets roped into this company and their "claims" of saving you money on your natural gas bills.

  • Jan 19, 2023

Exactly

That's exactly what I was thinking.

  • Jan 6, 2019

Maybe You Work for SFE?

All anyone has to do -- before signing -- is look at the fees under items 6 and 7 under Terms of Service. If you're comfortable paying those, even if SFE delivers cheaper gas product, then that's your decision. If you do sign up and regret it, you must cancel within 3 business days, as I did.

Not BBB accredited

The guy who showed up at my door made the claim that they are a California company working with the California Utilites Commission. Well I went to the BBB and searched for SFE Energy, they are not accredited and they are "aka SFE Energy Canada Inc" they are not even a USA company. Later in the afternoon he showed up at the door again by mistake, my husband saw several of them is a group canvassing the neighborhood. If it sounds to good to be true it usually is. So glad I did not sign anything.

Not BBB accredited

I checked the BBB site and they are NOT accredited. Also the person who came to my door claimed he was working for the California Utilities Commission. Not so, the are not a California company which he went out of his way to say. If you go to the BBB and type in SFE Energy they are aka SFE Energy Canada. So I do not trust someone who flat out lies about what he is doing, I am thankful I did not sign anything.

SFE salesman knocked on my 85 year old mothers door. She opened thinking it was my Brother. The smooth talker switched her electric to there company. He told her he would save her money. My mother was on a plan already that was Cheaper then what he offered. Smooth and fast talking he made a call, and had her change to the SFE Energy more Expensive plan.

Luckly my sister came along the next day and rectified the Scam quickly. What a Rip Off and a Scam!

Smoke and Mirrors

Rep was very friendly. I invited him in because it was freezing outside and I was cold. Said he'd save me $300 a year because his rates were lower. I saw the data he put in front of me and it looked good.

Then I got my bill. They charged me $0.78 / therm and $0.151 / kWh. They said their price doesn't fluctuate. I called the utility company to see what the fluctuation was the past 5 years. They told me gas was between $0.40 - $0.45 / therm and power was $0.10 - $0.12. I cancelled right away and since the contract was for 3 years and I had to sign 2 contacts, one for electric and one for gas, @ $25 per year per contract cancellation fee, I had to pay $150 to cancel this crappy service.

Listen to 90% of the people above and just politely send the salesmen away. Stop being cheap and have some loyalty for the company that is providing your utilities. Take it from some one who learned a $500 dollar lesson.

Loyalty to a Disfunctional Publity Utilities Co. that is in bankruptcy for negligence???

I think NOT.

However, I didn't confirm what the therm cost is for my usual provider. I will now. Thanks.

i avoided being scammed!

a rep from SFE appeared at my door this afternoon. She spoke very fast and I had to ask her to repeat herself a couple of times. I specifically asked her if her intention was to switch me to a different utility company. She said she was not that she only wanted to make sure our bill was stabilized so that the cost would not go up.

she said she was working in behalf of our local utility. I was uncomfortable because I had never heard of our utility company doing this before. when she wanted to look at our meter to see the kilowatts, I couldn't understand why. she also wanted to see our bill. What for? I could have told her what we were paying. When she indicated that she would also like to come in, I decided I didn't like this at all and said I wasn't interested. as I shut the door she appeared shocked.

but afterward I checked this out on the internet and discovered that this is a common scam. By am I glad I said no.

SFE Pgh

This company is the worst place you could ever go to. They scam people door to door and tell people false information. The guy came up to my door and told a whole bunch of false information. He had told me he wanted to see my bill then he tried saying he was gonna save me money, but when I got my bill the next month my bill tripled in price. If they come to ur house call the police. Go on any website and check for urselves, you are gonna get a cheaper price somewhere else or stay with ur utility is ur best bet! SFE is a lie! Untrustworthy company and untrustworthy PEOPLE work there. If u wanna avoid being scammed u got three Bussiness days to cancel. CANCEL!!! The people they have working for them are uneducated scum off the street. They cannot run a business, they don't provide u ANY DEALS I CAN PROMISE U THAT. DO URSELF A FAVOR and CALL the police before u get scammed. Technically there not allowed to come to ur door without a permit and they never have permits. In residential areas by law they have to have a permit and if they don't or u are suspicious call the police they will let you know if those people are allowed to be solicitting!!!!So do me and you a favor if u have someone come to ur door CALL POLICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Company SFE is a Scam, and the people working there are liars and tell false information.

SFE IS NOT A SCAM

I signed up with SFE and got the rates I was supposed to get. I did have to sign a contract but it locked me in at the fixed rate for three years so now I don't have to worry about the price fluctuating.

SFE

Is a scam!!!!! U need to open ur eyes! There rates are not cheaper I can guarantee u that! This company is HUGE scam. They have a bunch of uneducated people working for them. SFE tells people they are working for gas and electric. What they are really doing is going around telling people they are being overcharged when they aren't be. People are misinformed and don't know how to read there bill therefore don't realize what scam they are actually getting into. Avoid being scammed cause I can promise u THEY SCAM PEOPLE! If you go with them I can guarantee ur electric bill and gas bill will be higher next month. SFE is also commission based. A door to door guy came up to my door and I threatened them to call the cops. If I was u id call the cops! They are not allowed to solicitate without a permit from ur neighborhood. Call ur local police dept. and ask if they actually paid for the permit cause I can 99% say they prob don't have a permit and are not allowed to do that! SCAM!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not a Scam

A Sales Rep came to my home in a very professional manner. He explained the supplier rates that SFE offers in comparison to the rates that I am paying now which was on my utility bill. It was significantly lower and needless to say I signed up. He was not pushy and didn't force me to sign any contract. If my bill has not increased in the next few months I know I can cancel any time with out any cancellation fees. I'm just happy to have a lower rate, my electric bill has been thru the roof!

SFE also posts lies on blogs...

After a couple hours researching SFE on the Better Business Bureau and similar sites, I realize that SFE is a scam, eslpecially after the SFE customer rep huffily said "There's no legal requirement that we list with the Better Business Bureau."

Those contracts you sign have a stiff cancellation fee, and if you call the customer support number, you get someone in India who pretends to know nothing.

Once they have your account number, they may sign you up without your knowledge ("slamming") and then say it was a "former employee" who did it. Their employee turnover is phenomenal, according to posts by former employees who objected to the hard sell techniques SFE uses.

Just Say No.

Horrible experience

I stupidly signed up with SFE feeling sorry for the young man who showed up at my door offering a sob story about being the 1st person he'd talked to all day within my development. Since signing up with SFE my bill has been $80-$100 more than my highest bill since I've lived in my home. Attempts to contact SFE have only resulted in me spending time on hold waiting to talk to someone or sending emails and waiting for a response. I am in the process now of trying to cancel this terrible service. Hopefully no one else falls for such a scam.

A rep SFE Energy was canvassing door to door in a private community where soliciting is prohibited and is making statement designed to obfuscate the purpose of his visit which is to get homeowners to buy electric or gas energy from his company vs our current supplier. (Maryland has multiple suppliers and it is a chighly competetive market. But we have one regulated distribution company, Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE). The rep makes an attempt to enter the home by saying " I'm here to check your BGE smart meter to make sure your are getting the best rate come september when BGE rates increase." (Smart Meters are a new innovation and most consumers don't understand the technology.) This is a complete ruse. There is nothing to check and the meter is not inside the house. He then interrogated me on who was my supplier. I declined to answer and threatened to call the police because BGE tells customers to call the police if anybody attemps to represent BGE for the perposes of gaining entry. He did give me a valid business cart but the con was apparent. If he had gained entry he would have told me I could save thousands by singning the supplier switch agreement. I currently buy my electricity from a NY company that currently has the lowest rate in Maryland for the 12 mo period 6/14/-6/15.

Glad I read these reviews.

They came to my door but I blew them off so he left a large post card for future contact. Couldn't find SFE California but Bizpedia gave me their CA entity number and found them as CORPORATION SERVICE COMPANY WHICH WILL DO BUSINESS IN CALIFORNIA AS CSC - LAWYERS INCORPORATING SERVICE

They are actually located in Canada so good luck if you need to sue them.

Legitimate companies don't hide.

SAME OLE SCAM

Shortly before 10pm on May 2, 2017 a SFE Energy, a young man (Rep ID:BF5635) knocked on my door and tried to get me to sign up w/ SFE. I told him he was taking advantage of me since he lived in my building. I only opened door becuz I knew him. I refused every request and when objected to his doing business after dark he said SFE was opened til 10pm. W/ posted signs saying "No Soliciting," he admitted he skirted the issue because he lived in bldg. In spite of pleas, I refused to show him my BGE bill or to reveal my distributer. And I told him he and his company were a nuisance & out-of-order.

...I'm calling the State Atty Gen office tomorrow because the next morning one of his SFE colleagues (Antoinne) called me and using my first name tried to have a conversation about energy & solar panels. Why not call SFE @1-866-255-3844 and complain?

Smells fishy to me!

A fast talking young man wearing a lanyard that said SFE California came to my door this afternoon in San Jose and asked to see my PG&E bill to find out who was my gas supplier so he could make sure my bill didn't exceed a certain flat rate . He was filling out information on a clipboard that looked like a contract, but didn't want to give me a copy of it or let me take a close look at it. The whole thing smelled fishy. He then told me he was available for adoption and asked how many dogs did I have. I told him I was too busy to talk to him.

SFE is cheating new resident

I just moved in Philly area and the SFE guys went to my place and promise me that their service will save my money and I easily trust him and sign the contract. But the reality is the nature gas rate they provide is 3 times higher than the PECO's rate and the electricity rate is about 20% higher than PECO, which causes me to pay at least $20 more each month. How could they can survive by cheating peoples.

SFE is the # 1 scam company in the Universe.

They are the scum of the world. SFE is the worst and most deceptive company in the Universe, not just the Earth. How the US government allow such a company to cheat, trick, and lie to people, so as to steel their hard-earned money. When you call customer service, a person from India, answers the phone to defend the company knowing he is 100% lying on the company's behalf. The company pays him few dollars an hour to take the cries and complaints from all the screwed customers. I would not do his dirty cheap low job (of lying to people) even if the company pays me a million dollars an hour. SFE should be persecuted and closed.

Scammed

My 81 yr old husband answered the door to a young girl stating she could save us money on our electric bill. Since our bill is high now due to the air conditioner and other uses he jumped at the chance to save money. The Co. Is Sfe Energy and when we received our bill the rate is much higher than our current rate was. We feel this is a scam and have to pay $50 for a termination fee. We are going to pay to get rid of the scammers.

no Stars but because I have to 1 star

Came to my door, sounded good, signed agreement in Oct. 2015 and tried to cancel in Jan 2016. Outrageous charges, especially in colder weather. I contacted to cancel both electric and gas, offered another good rate, sent me new contract, did not sign. They cancelled electric not gas after two phone calls and one email. got my bill this month still bearing their name as the supplier charging me $138.00 delivery charge. I called and inquired if it was a cancelling fee which I was told they wouldn't charge. Tomi told me no it was my delivery fee and I explained for a half hour on how it was cancelled in January (this is March) and after two prior phone calls and emails, only electric was pending cancellation. PSE&G was not cancelled when I didn't sign a new contract and was handed this BS that the confirmation on cancellation was for JCP&L even though I distinctly said in my email it was for the gas company. What a run around and still have to pay. Tomorrow is a call to her manager because "he wasn't available" after we spoke. So I assume another 1/2-1 hour will be wasted at 9 a.m. that I can never get back. SCAM artists to the extreme. Neer again will I answer the door to a solicitor.

Door to door salesman came to my house today and pretended to be from Baltimore Gas & Electric company, said they were there to confirm my electric rate plan and keep my rates low for the coming year. He conspicuously waved a clipboard with a printed out BGE invoice on it, but had a tag around his neck that said SFE. When I questioned him further, it finally came out that he was, of course, selling electric rate plans, was not with Baltimore Gas & Electric, and etc.

I don't understand why these people lie about things to try to sell their product, I guess maybe it works often enough to make it worth it for them. I told him he had misrepresented himself and closed the door.

Not a Scam, People are Just Misinformed

If you do your research, you would understand SFE Energy is a energy supplier, like many others. You can check on your local utility companies website that will show you, you have the option to choose a supplier. It's up to you to do your research and find a legitimate supplier that offer the rates that best suite your needs.

I have been enrolled with SFE Energy for 2 years now, and the lady who came to my door was very polite, did not force me to sign anything, she was very informative, and I did not sign up that same day. I did my research and contacted her the next day (she gave me her business card) and I signed up.

It's not SFE Energy that's a scam. It's the reps faults if they are misinforming or misleading consumers. These reps should be fired. The rep that came to my door had a SFE Energy Badge and never said he was from my utility company. So people stop bashing the company when it really might be the individual rep who should report to the company!

Ripoff company

One of SFE door to door reps scammed my sister pretending to work for PECO. The rep lied to her and told her she would

receive a refund from PECO because she was overcharged and they would help her lower her bill. After I read the contract,

I made my sister aware that this rep just signed her up for SFE, a different energy supplier. since it's only been a few days

she has tried to cancel the contract but it has fallen on deaf ears.I'm trying to help her get out of the contract.

Today someone knocked on my door, and behold, a SFE rep telling me about a PECO rate hike and PECO tried to contact me twice and I didn't respond. This rep also stated that he was here to fix the situation. I politely told him no thank you however I ended up closing the door in his face because he didn't understand the word NO. Apparently he didn't look up to see that I

have solar panels as most of my neighbors do, so that should have told him something.
