Sentinel Security Life Insurance Co Reviews

  • Mar 26, 2015

I am writing on behalf of my mother in law. First her history: She NEVER in 50+ years of marriage balanced a check book, took care of bank accounts, or handled anything to do with finances. She was sheltered by her husband who kept her out of all financial dealings. She has never driven a car and saw her role as the home maker. After her husbands death everything to do with finances were dropped in her lap thus creating a world of near destructive stress. Her daughter and myself live 11+ hours away and she and her husband never had computers and she knew nothing about how faxes worked. We, were there to help help her with the transition of not only loosing her husband but adjusting to all the new responsiblities thrust upon her.

Enter Sentinel Security Life agent Patrick Crowder. A supplimental health insurance policy had been written by Crowder three days before the death of her husband but she had no knowledge of the working of it except that a monthly payment was made and she showed her card when needed at the doctors appointments but as far as being involved in the discussion with Crowder there was none. Her husband gone and her daughter 11 hours away and a belief that bankers and insurance agents can be trusted, sets the scene. Crowder calls and tells her he wants to come by her house and see how she is doing with her supplimental insurance but after arriving he tells her she needs to invest some the money her husband left and he has an annuity that would work perfect for her. So in very short order he talks her into surrending $80,000 to Sentinal Security. As she reflects back on Crowder's demeanor, he was nervous and looking every few minutes at his watch reminding her the bank was closing soon and needed to close the deal. He went to the bank, got the papers for her to sign, drove back to her home, had her sign them, took them back to the bank and said she had said it was ok to withdraw the money. The bank called to confirm she was OK with this. The banker has told us that she said, and I quote, "Well (name of banker) is this a good idea to do this, he says it is." the bankers repley is, "I am sorry (name), but I am not a financial advisor and can not advise you on this so you can say yes it is ok or no if you don't think so." "Well," she respondes, "I guess he knows what he is doing so yes go ahead and withdraw the money from my account.

Crowder sold her a 5 year annuity without explaining that if she had to cash it before the five years she would loose upwards of $5000 on her investment. He did not ask her to sleep on it or to contact her daugther for advice rather he pushed it thru in very quick manner taking advantage of an 79 year old widow who knew zero about finances and even less about investing. To me that borders on preditory action.

We have tried to get information from Patrick Crowder personally, by leaving voice mails and waiting for a return call. We have left 4 messages on his voice mail. We did talk to him personally while he said he was driving and he said he would get back to us that afternoon. Nothing. That is why we called the HQ in Salt Lake City to get the information we needed.
