We had the unfortunate experience of contracting Dan Smith - the principal of the RICC Group - to build our property when he was trading as DJ Smith Construction.
To say that it was a nightmare would be an understatement.
We signed a contract to build our property for $1.1M with this fraud. The construction times blew out and the workmanship was deplorable. In the end we were forced to engage legal counsel and take the matter to the then BSA (Building Services Authority). Media pressure was applied to this body - who also represent builders - in the end assessors from the BSA found that Smith's work was unacceptable.
He was given directions to rectify numerous major defects on the property. Smith neglected to rectify his defective works and was subsequently deregistered by the BSA and a maximal claim of $250,000 (Australian dollars) was made on his building insurance policy. Smith was not allowed to be a "person of influence" in a building company for five years.
Now that that time has lapsed we are appalled to find he is now trading under the company name the RICC Group, further he is using photographs of our property - which he never finished - to promote his work. Specifically see the following links:
http://riccgroup.com.au/projects/page/3/#!prettyPhoto - ours is the pool in the second row
http://riccgroup.com.au/projects/page/4/ - ours is the kitchen in the top row extreme right
http://riccgroup.com.au/projects/page/4/ - ours is the property on the bottom row second from the left
http://riccgroup.com.au/projects/page/5/ - top row second from the left - this is our deck that he didn't even build!
http://riccgroup.com.au/projects/page/5/ - bottom row - photos titled "Birdwood Terrace" - this is our place in the state Dan Smith left the property before the BSA stepped in and finished it.
http://riccgroup.com.au/projects/page/6/ - all photos titled "Birdwood Terrace" are of our place and this was the build Dan Smith of the RICC Group was deregistered for building to a standard which did not comply with Queensland building standards.
If you Google looking for a builder in Brisbane and come across the RICC Group - look elsewhere. Run in the opposite direction.
Dan Smith (the owner of this company) has left a trail of disaster behind him, not just in the contruction of our property - which approximately 8 years after Dan Smith left the project - was finally certified, but to numerous other clients we found (and reported to the BSA) and NUMEROUS sub-contractors and suppliers he ripped off and didn't pay for their services or products - we found over $1.3M owing to suppliers which was reported to the BSA, DJ Smith Construction went into liquidation and Smith lost his property over the matter. Search DJ Smith Construction with either the BSA or ASIC and it will show the company was wound up. Dan Smith (the owner of the RICC Group) is the same person disqualified from building for defective works for 5 years.
Don't risk the anguish and pain you WILL experience dealing with this scum.
