I wanted to share my experience with looking for an apartment in New York City. I am currently on a month to month lease and looking to remain in the Harlem Morningside area.
Not wanting to pay real estate broker fees, I searched on Craigslist.org in the apartment by owners section.
Making a few calls and sending out numerous emails I scheduled several appointments.
This is where things got confusing. Out of the ten appointments I made eight were with the same person.
I had no idea of this, because Chuck Newman used various names, emails and phone numbers.
While looking with Chuck Newman he explained to me that he works with two major landlords,
Reliance Realty and Heritage Realty. They have exclusives on their properties and CHARGE A BROKERS FEE ON EVERY ONE OF THEM! After hearing this I was very angry and disappointed.
What a waste of my time!
At this point I played along with his game, told him I would like to take the next step on renting one of his apartments. The next day I received an email from Chuck Newman stating that I have to present $600 cash or money order to hold the apartment.
Needless to say I declined.
