I discovered this negative account on my credit today only to realize I had no idea what it was. The phone number listed brought me to a representative who told me it was a collection agency attempting to collect a debt. The charge was for $31 and he said it was from scholastic for some books. I told him I never ordered any books. He said it was back in 2008... I again told him I have no idea who would have ordered them in my name, but I never received anything. He told me it was fine and he would take it off my credit report, but there would be a service charge to do so. I told him there was no way I was paying to have it removed from my credit after being denied a home loan because of fraud. He insisted I pay $6 and he could just remove it. I told him "no way in hell" and "that is absurd" and I know legally they can't charge me to remove something fraudulent from my report. I'm going to dispute it, but would also like to sue the hell out of them for costing me a house. I looked online and it appears as though there was a class action lawsuit back in the mid 2000's over the same thing. They never sent me any kind of notice to pay prior, and waited over 5 years to randomly add it to my report. The date on the charge says the account was opened in 2013, even though he said the charge was back in 2008 on the phone. And they waited until 2014 to report it. A*******. I'm not paying them anything.
