I went onto the nslds.ed.gov website and under my federal pell grant reports, it stated that for the 2013-2014 year, the school received $5,645. $1,882 was used. The remaining amount left was $3,763. Then for 2014-2015, they received $5,730, used $3,820, and had left over $1,910.
I attended the school from April 2014 to December 2014.
Sooooo my questions are why haven't I received my refund? And why is it that i have to contact the school (who i still have heard nothing from) to get information about why the remaining balance wasn't sent to me?
What I don't like is the lack of communication, and the beurocratic execution of policy without consideration of outside influence. They advertise to be very flexible with schedules, and course work; but that is not the case. They basically told me what I wanted to hear to get me to give up all of my money and benifits. And if you would have told me at 23 that my GI Bill benifits would basically be stolen from me via lies from an alledged institution of higher learning; I wouldn't have left the Army. I was alot better at dealing with bullets and bombs than I am at dealing with people who just swindled me.
I have had 2 academic advisors. Neither one knew how to return a phone call. My first advisor would call, and leave a voice mail; and I would call and leave 10 voicemails before I actually got him to answer. Not 10 voicemails to return a call, but 10 voicemails were left before he would answer his phone. This would take days, if not a week, to get one question answered. The second advisor pulls the same stuff, but with more important matter.
Recently, I was faced with the prospect of fighting a wrongfull eviction from my place of residence. I contacted my instructors, as any student should; and I got return emails from all of them within 24 hours stating that I should try my best to keep up, and keep them in the loop. I let them know that I had been borrowing a roommates car, and that this was no longer available. This really only applied to one class, College Algebra; the rest were all online. I let them know so I could turn in late work, without losing points. Becuase I could only access my online courses via cell phone, or my work computer after hours; I made sure to let them all know. This wrongfull eviction action began May 24, 2014, and I sent the email to my instructors on May 26, 2014 at 8:32 AM.
Today is June 2, 2014 and I just recieved notice that I was being dropped from one of my classes for not attending in 14 days. The class is only Monday nights for 11 weeks. How did I miss 14 days? Also, this call happened in typical fashsion. My advisor called at 9:54 AM and left a message that I was being dropped from College ALgebra course, and I needed to return her call. I was at work, but I called back at 12:58 PM, and 2:41 PM. Finally at 5:01 PM, I got her to answer her phone. Once again, she did not return my call, she answered her phone. She told me that she had already dropped me from the course, and this meant that I had to repay and retake the course. I informed her of my living situation, and wrongfull eviction; she told me I needed to contact her sooner!!!!!!! I left 2 freakin messages, and 1 email to 4 instructors outlining the situation. What was I supposed to do; hand deliver the information and staple it to her forhead.
After hearing this, I tried to contact the Academic Dean. The receptionist informed me that it seemed like the Deans line was busy, but I could be transfered to her voicemail. I declined, and asked for her direct line number. She provided it, and I tried to call her myself. She was right, it went straight to voicemail. So I left a voicemail outlining how this should not be acceptable; and that I did give prior notice to the people who actually needed it. I called twice more after. Wierd enough, the phone didn't go straight to voicemail. So she ignored my new voice mail pertaining to these eggregious and outrageous actions.
This is just scratching the surface. When I went to speak with the recruiters about possibly starting school, I made it clear I am a hands on learner. The female recruiter informed me that this would not always be the case, but she should be able to arrange a way to get most of the career specific courses in a classroom setting. In 3 quarters out of 5, I have had 2 physical classroom courses. Intro to Business, and College Algebra. I have taken Intro to Networking, Microsoft Windows Workstations, Computer Applications and Business Systems Concepts, Fundamentals of PC Hardware and Software........all online. I built a computer from instructions online, and managed to learn almost nothing. OH I paid for it all though, but that recruiter straight up lied.
The Intro to Business was a bit of a conundrum for me, becuase I showed them unofficial transcripts outlining 2 previous degrees I had started but never finished. They said my previous coursework, including Business Law; was not the same as intro to business. I pointed out the fact that I started my own business at 23, and ran it until I decided the paralegal field wasn't right for me. That still didn't matter. I kept my notes from Business Law, and used those to pass rather than take new notes. I wanted to see if they were playing me, and it turns out they were. The course was exactly the same as business law, absent a course project that requires you to start a mock business. I took Buisness Law, and had started my own business 3 years prior.
Whatever the hell is going on over there; it isn't right. This place is tore up from the floor up, and I can't believe that the complaints listed above would be accptable in any educational institution in the world. They swindled me out of my GI Bill, but I won't let them do it to one of my battles. "Veterans Beware" Anyone considering attending, please be aware they are very good at telling you what you want to hear. And considering most instructors are graduates who couldnt find a job, $299.00 per credit is too much. My first school was a state funded Jr College that cost $109.00 per credit. I encourage anyone who is considering attending this school to check every other Jr Collage first. It is cheaper, and has to be better. These guys didn't exactly set the bar high.
