I signed up with Progressive because they offered me the lowest cost option. After two months I noted an increase in my policy payment by over double what I previously had. There were no accidents or incidents on my policy during this time, so I called Progressive to find out what happened. Apparently I needed to provide proof of residence on my account. I had not recieved any communication in this matter, though they claimed to have emailed me. This is my first complaint. As this would cause a change in my policy, communication greater than an email would be warranted. Even if I had elected for email only communication for my statements, they are needing action on my part, and a phone call would have been warranted. Had they needed money they would have called, but because failure on my part to act would result in and increase in revenue they did not do this.
I stated that I would provide proof of residence and asked what I needed to provide. They told me a tax bill, mortgage bill, or utility bill would be sufficient. As a recent college graduate, I am currently living with my parents. I do not have any of these forms of proof. I was, after 45 minutes, able to argue with them enough to allow me to provide alternative proofs. I was told I had 3 days to garnish this proof- one of which was a signed letter from HR. As most people with careers know, it can take weeks to get paperwork back from HR so I was unable to provide the proof requested- though I am still waiting for the paperwork.
I complained via the BBB, and their response was that they grabbed my address from a consumer reporting agency. I continually monitor my reports, and all of them have my parents address as my new address, so I am curious as to why they chose my previous address as opposed to my most recent address. I truly believe this is because my old address has a $100 increase on my policy per month. This is added revenue, and I'm sure I'm not the only recent graduate affected by this policy. This is fradulent practices and I am disgusted by this company.
