Garage door would not open Sunday afternoon; car was stuck in the garage and unfortunately could not open the door manually. I quickly search for garage door repair on the internet and found Precision Garage Doors in Pittsburgh that had service on Sundays. Their estimated arrival time was 8-10pm that evening and actually showed up between 5-5:30pm. The technician had called and said he was running early. I now know why they were available on such short notice after obtaining a quote. Keep in mind, I have no idea what a garage door repair cost and had no idea what was wrong. The technicain quickly pointed out that I had a spring that was broken and that it needed replaced. Price to replace 2 springs: $438. The technician also provided me other more expensive options that included replacing ""rollers"" and all other working parts related to the spring. The cost for these other options ranged from $600-$800. I opted to only replace the springs. I agreed and went upstairs while the work was being completed. I decided to google ""costs to replace 2 springs on a 2 car garage door"" and found prices ranging from $150 -$225 for not only the springs, but a maintenance check and diagnostic testing. I continued to search and ran across Angie's list and an article from garage door experts who also indicated the cost to be in that range as well. I asked the technician why Precision's quote was so high. He claimed there products were the best and would last 28-36K cycles compared to cheaper products their competitors offered. Keep in mind, their high-quality products came with an impressive 3-month warranty. Wow, a whole 3-months... that definitely backs up their claim that these were high-quality. I asked if the price was higher because it was Sunday and the technician said no. Well, after pointing out all the facts that I found, he decided to remove the service charge of $75 reducing the cost to $358. That didn't take much haggling. Most likely since they mark-up the springs 200-300%. I did receive a call from the manager the next morning. Unfortunately no reduction in cost. I told me it was safe to remove me from Precision Garage Door' mailing list.. My advice is if you have to time, to checkout Angie's List. If I wasn't in a bind, I would have done the same; most likely would have saved me another $100 or so. Unfortunate there are so many service companies out there wanting to rip-off the consumer. Gillece is another one, but don't get me started. Good luck, I hope this review helps. Live and learn.
I am a retired garage door repair professional with 35 years of experience. I was curious to see what the fuss on the internet was about with precision door is. I called and was quoted a 29.95 service call. . I can no longer physically handle the repair So I needed someone. I know the difference from bad or good parts what should be replaced and why. I fully inspected my own equipment prior to calling and had determined I needed springs as one was broken, my rollers were 10 yr old originals and noisy and my gear in my operator was wearing. My entire system was 11 yrs old with only lubrication performed by me and everything is original to when the home was constructed.
the technician called within the timeframe given and gave me a 30 minute notification prior to his arrival. This is good trade practice. Upon arrival he introduced himself and shook my hand. ( this shows me better training ) the technician asked if there was a side door so he did not have to come through the house. There was not I asked him to follow me through the house. He wiped his feet off on my mat prior to entering. Once in the garage he noticed the obvious that I had a broken spring. He informed me that was no problem to repair and asked if he could complete his checklist prior to giving me any estimates. I said sure take your time. I asked if the technician minded if I remain in the garage for the duration. He said no problem I enjoy when my customers are present it allows me to explain what I am doing. ( this tells me the technician is no rookie And has confidence)
the technician inspected everything. Literally. He even opened the door operator and inspected the inside. Remember the nylon gear. The technician came back with a few estimates and reviewed the checklist with me. He first estimate was to replace both springs, a center bearing, and replace the gear in my opener, and yearly maintenance with a 90 day warranty. The second was to replace springs, center bearing, gear and rollers with a one year warranty. The third was to replace the same as the second but offered a chain drive operator, cables and bottom seal with a 3 year warranty on door parts 1 year on the operator. ( I missed it was showing light on my inspection and my wife hates snakes. ) or he offered and estimate on door and operator replacement.
i reviewed this with the technician and explained to him I was looking for a different path. I explained I live in a deed restricted community and full replacement door I did not want to deal with but knowing my panels were good id like it to be reliable and solve everything on his checklist. He asked me to wait and he would grab his price book. We went through the prices together. I selected what their company calls and elite overhaul. This included bottom seal, rollers, cables, end bearings, drums, center bearing, springs, torsion shaft and a 10 year warrany on all parts. The we went through the operator choices together I selected a new belt drive operator with two remotes and a keyless at no additional charge With a one year warranty on labor and parts. I asked the technician to show me some of the parts he would install. He gladly did. He also explained that any of their openers could be updated and have a battery back up unit installed later without changing out the entire unit. I agreed and signed off on an elite overhaul and a belt drive operator. I asked the technician about how long to do all the work. He explained about two hours. I again asked if I could remain in the garage. He said sure no problem.
During the repair the technician showed me each part he was changing compared to my old one. I can tell you some of my parts could have been reused but what they were installing was superior to my existing parts. Now I was curious to see the performance. The technician worked efficiently and neatly. At no point after our agreement to he try to sell me anything. The technician demonstrated a proper door balance and asked me to run the door by hand to make sure I could use the door in the event of a power outage. It worked perfectly. He finished his operator and asked me to program my number in the keypad. He demonstrated all the features of the operator. He asked to use my hose to was his hands. I said sure. He then offered to program the home links in my vehicles at no charge which he did with no problem.
During the repair the technician asked to excuse himself as he needed to contact his next customer. He explained to the next customer he was running slightly behind and gave them an eta.
I can tell you I paid almost a few hundred less than a new door for an elite overhaul but my door performs better than a new door. I also paid about 500 for my new belt drive operator which is average for the high end model I chose. The technician did offer at the end a yearly maintence annually to lubricate and make all the adjustments for 59.95 with no service call. I agreed to this. The technician also picked up all of his garbage, wiped down any fingerprints off my door and wall, and asked if it was ok to put their company sticker on my door. (Really he asked).
The technician shook my hand after I signed I was satisfied and thanked me for the business. I never told him I was a retired door technician. He never struggled with his work. He corrected things that I knew were done wrong when it was installed without asking. I had a fellow expert in the garage.
If you want the cheap quick fix I can tell you this is not the company to use. If you want to hear from an experienced technician and are willing to listen and touch and pay for good parts this is the company to use. I now have the quietest door in my community. My wife is satisfied with how quiet the door is and no more snakes in the garage. Everything is working as it should for 30 days now with no problems. I may upgrade the unit to include battery back up on my annual maintence next year. I never felt pressured or a hard sell. I recieved only information from the technician.
This is an example of not only what you should expect from a garage door company but any service provider for your home. If a service provider will not allow you to be present through the whole process do not use them! If they will not show you what they are installing, why, and how it will solve your problem don't use them! I will continue to use this franchise of precision door again with confidence.
