I was to a pet store trying to buy 1 fish, I only wanted one for my 20 gallon tank that I previously purchased from that same store together with the filter and another items needed for my aquarium, and the employee refused to sell me the fish because my tank was to small, if the aquarium is to small and we won't be able to purchase fishes for that size of tank, then why do they sell it?, then I was told of another smaller fish that will be best in my tank,
so I asked the employee for one of them, he refused to sell it to me and he didn't believe I had a tank in my house and he said that he will not sell me the fish until I bring a sample of my tank water to see if it was a god environment... he did not explain to me what else I needed to have a proper environment for that fish, he just refused to sell me the fish, and they were selling fishes to other clients, so I left storewith nothing.
2 days later I decided to call the store and talk to a manager, she apologized and told me I was welcome to go back to the store and she was going to help me getting the fish and items I needed to have a proper environment for my fish.
So, a week later, I went back to the same store, I was at the aquatic department, the representative was helping another customer, she was really nice and kind with the other client, she noticed I was there waiting so when she finish with the other client she can help me, but she did't greeted me, or said anything to me, she left ignoring me completelly, so I went to the cashier and asked for the manager I spoke on the phone a few days ago, but she was off that day, I asked for another manager, and here he comes,
I told him I was waiting for the employee to be helped and she left leaving me there, and his response was "well maybe its because she is busy", he didn't offer to help me, ("he was to busy cleaning some items"), when I told him about my previous experience with the other employee, he said "well now everybody here are being rude to you", and said that about the employee who refused to sell me the fish, he had his reasons, just bring me the sample of the water or we can not sell you the fish,
he didn't help me find the items I was looking for, he didn't give me the opportunity to buy what I was looking for, about the other employee she approached to us and she did admit that she ignored me, and she apologized to me, but even with that the manager didn't offer to help me, I am hispanic and I was there with my 2 kids, who were asking me why the employees didn't allow us to buy the fish nor help us to find the rest of the items we needed for our tank.
They said "If we think your tank is not a good environment we won't sell you the fish", but what about the rest of the items I was looking for, also why they didn't help me to find or offer me the items I needed, at this point I don't even know what is or is not missing in my tank, they didn't give me the opportunity to purchase anything, the manager was just justifying his employees and arguing with me, making me feel that I didn't not deserve to shop at that store, he refuses to help me, he made me feel that I couldn't afford to shop at that store, while they were helping all other clients....
I really feel bad, I think I was discriminated in front of my two kids. I agree that fishes are pets not things, and I think that the pets stores need to educate people on what they need to purchase to have a proper environment for the fishes, and not just selling small aquariums and filters to get the money and at the end they decide who will be and who won't be allow to purchase fishes just judging for the peoples appearance.
I would like to have and advice of somebody who knows about this, to see if how they treated me was right or not.
