The product looks great but the customer service is terrible and they have no idea what they are doing.
I carefully looked at the different stains on the market and decided to use the penofin verde in rosewood despite it being much more expensive then all other stains. I loved the fact that it much more expensive. I loved the 99% UV protection, the lov VOC and the "green" aspect.
When I applied it, I followed the directions by wiping it off as I went along. I ended up using 1 gallon which covered about 700-ish square feet.
When I came back after a couple days after it cured, there were some glossy spots where with the stain didn't fully seep in or it bled back up. When I called penofin, I happily received the manager of the department who assured me that if I use their #2 cleaner that it would take care of it.
I bought the product, mixed according to her instructions and applied it, let it sit for about 5 minutes, then used my push broom, again, by her directions to scrub it off... this is where it started going down hill.....
while rinsing the mop, a lot of stain was coming out of it... and I mean a lot. I mopped and dried it.. when I went back, I noticed that my floors were a little gray. I called and spoke to the manager again who assured me it was ok, they just needed to dry and that I need to go back an do it again because I had missed a couple of spots. So I did so...
This made it even worse... now my floors are dark gray. Very upset now, I looked at the product they suggested and it says for exterior use, no where does it say interior. I guess I should have read the product and questioned instead of taking the word of the manager, which should be an expert.
They now suggest I use the #3 product to remove the gray, but I'll have to go back and re-sand and stain the floors. I asked to talk to her manager over 48 hours ago and have yet to hear from someone despite 2 follow up email, each 24 hour apart and 24 hours after the request to talk to the higher manager. All this original manager keeps throwing at me is that I didnt follow her directions and that the warranty only covers refund of the product. After the first time I used this product, I showed the managers at the hardware store where I bought the stain and #2 cleaner, and they all agree with me that her email never said to use the product on a small section, in fact, by saying to use a push broom, it implies that you can do the entire floor at one time. It also never said that it could gray the floor.
So in summary, save yourself the frustration and never buy this product. It looks great but if you ever need help, don't trust the "experts".
I built a large deck in May of 2013 with brand new 5/4" cedar. After allowing the wood to dry for several days, I applied Penofin blue label finish to it according to the directions on the back of the can.
It looked fine for the first couple of months, then I started to notice black vertical streaks on some of the vertical surfaces and a large amount of mildew and mold growth. It was as if this Penofin finish accelerated the mold and mildew growth! I had to let it go through the winter due to running out of dry weather.
In May of 2014, I tried power washing a small spot, the streaks lightened slightly but did not come off. I could also tell that the power washing was raising the grain of the cedar, so I knew that would not resolve the problem.
I applied a diluted bleach wash, let it sit for a few minutes, and rinsed well. It looks a little lighter but the black vertical streaks still show On many of the vertical surfaces. The diluted bleach basically killed the mold and mildew only, it did not get rid of the black vertical streaks.
The finish on the horizontal surfaces is almost non existent, keep in mind this is only one year old. It is as if the sun or rain dissopates it.
The deck looks horrible after all of my hard work. I have contacted Performance Coatings about it, but have not heard back as of yet.
