DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING....NOT EVEN A CREDIT CARD PIN-PAD at their store!!! Palm Beach Tan is deceptive and dishonest!!!
I stopped in at a store to start my basic tan membership. While I was there, they tried to sell me on a bunch of lotions but didn’t really explain how the membership worked. They asked me for some personal info (name, address, etc) and then said “sign here” and pointed to a small pin-pad like you would sign a credit card receipt. I actually thought I was just signing for the cost of the basic membership. I did not tan on that first visit.
I came in the next day, had time to tan, and left for the day. No issues. The day after that, I came back in to tan again. Imagine my surprise when the girl said I couldn’t tan at that time! Apparently you have to wait a full 24-hours before you can tan again (not just until the next day which was only 20-hours since my last tan). I was so mad….in fact, that’s when I realized that they had actually signed my name to a CONTRACT and not given me the opportunity to read the contract or to have a copy of it.
As the days went by, I finally got to the point where I could upgrade to the “diamond” membership. I used them for several months and then decided to stop tanning for the winter. I called my usual location to let them know I wanted to cancel. I was told that I had to come in to the location in person to cancel, but that I could come any time before the end of the month since I was already paid for the entire month.
I stopped by a store on 9/26 and cancelled my membership. Again they had me sign the pin-pad without offering to give me a copy of the contract. Then, a week later, I still got charged for October. I haven’t even tanned since the beginning of September….and I have not intentions to tan in October. When I called to speak with someone about it they told me that the billing cycle ended on 9/25 and that I was 1-day too late to cancel. She basically just told me it was “part of my contract” that I never got a copy of.
I do have to say that their business practices are misleading (not telling people they are signing a contract or offering for them to read it or get a copy of it). Additionaly the poor customer service (not telling people the REAL deadline to cancel, and not refunding their charges for a month that they aren’t using) must just be the way they do business. When I logged in to Rip Off Report to write this up I saw a ton of other issues people have had over the years....many of them just like this.
I do find it as my duty to warn other consumers of their bad business practices. Sadly, for a 24-hour timeframe and a $90 profit, Palm Beach Tan will be one company that I will go out of my way to keep consumers away from.
Palm Beach Tan make it really easy to sign up but cancelling is a nightmare. I moved from Augusta to Atlanta in September 2014 and forgot to stop by to cancel my account in person. I called the store and spoke to an employee and thought the account was closed.
Palm Beach is continuing to charge my card, which I dispute with my cardholder. After a few months, I called and spoke to the manager. Again, thought the situation was taken care of, but no. Then I sent a letter to the store manager, hoping that something with my physical signature would be enough to get it cancelled. Finally I contacted their corporate office who had their district manager call me. Not only was she rude and unhelpful, but she told me there was "no record" of me ever cancelling the account. She won't cancel my account until I pay the balance of charges and "late fees" that have built up over the last few months.
If you are gonna sign up with these people, be prepared to fight for your right to cancel. What terrible customer service.
Charged 490.70 from a tanning salon for months I haven't tanned at all. They say they have a clause but it is hidden and only the employee can see the screen showing clause to continually debit account. Customer's are mislead by thinking they are answersing typical skin type questions and then coerced into a "LIFETIME" membership allowing the company to draft the amount they choose. Consumers are not informed when you tell them you are finished tanning for the season that you must sign to cancel the draft (this is in small print on the form they never show you before you sign electronically). The scam comes in when the employee fails to tell you(once you have told them you will not be tanning and won't use the package anymore). I stopped tanning in July 2014 and told the employee I was done tanning and I would purchase another package in spring of 2015. The lady who was amazingly nice said yes it's that time of year when it's too hot to tan. (This is the part where Palm Beach is responsible to have their employees take proper steps to inform/ educate and ensure all steps are taken to stop charging accounts and ask for the customers signature on the infamous form they say allows them to draft any amount they choose because you signed an electronic form you never saw and were uneducated on.... So.... PBT drafted me again when I understood that I cancelled it. It caused me an overdraft fee and was returned because I didn't prepare for that 73.45 expense that month. I went into Palm Beach Tan and asked why they were still charging me. The employee then said you have to sign to stop the draft. I asked to sign to cancel and explained that I should have been told the month prior. The store refused to let me sign to cancel unless I paid them 73.45 for the month I never stepped foot in the salon and it didn't matter to them that it was an employee error. I refused to pay for that month because I had been a premier customer spending 100's of dollars on products while I tanned there and was mislead. I have called 3 to 4 times. Been in the store 5 times asking to cancel and emailed the corporate office in Texas twice. I've filed a dispute with my bank and PBT is still throwing up their little Clause and running drafts through my account. Decatur Alabama
