This contractor P&J Associates, owner Joe McGuire, took advantage of my distraught state and started working on my house, without an estimate or contract, after 17 pipes burst in my home due to frozen pipes. He started the work without supplying me an estimate telling me that his daughter would email it to me. This email never came although I continued to ask for it. The only work done was ceiling and walls painted in 5 rooms. Sheet rock on 3 1/2 walls but no paint or primer. Bad repair hole in ceiling. Placed sheet rock over ceiling in one room and partially in a half bath. The hardwood floor in one room has been destroyed with scratches and gouges. He damaged a new dishwasher and destroyed the insulation after removing it from the cabinets. They took down the interior door frames on 4 doors, I still don't know why he had to do that, and pulled out the door jam on one of those doors plus damaged the wood frame on 2 other doors.
This is the extent of the work done. He asked for a check for $6,500 as the work started, I wrote the check then was emailed a receipt but not itemized. About a week later he asked for another $4,000 and I reluctantly gave it to him and didn't receive a receipt for that until I asked him if he was going to return to finish the work. We had a disagreement regarding his workers being locked out of my house while he had the key and didn't want to drive to my home to let them in. He said I was being unreasonable because I wouldn't ask my son to interrupt his work to drive to my house to either drop off the key or open the door. When I returned home, I found all the materials were gone and no one came back to do any more work. I contacted him via text because he wouldn't set up his voicemail, asking him if anyone was coming to work on my home. He responded with an email stating that he will not do any more work until a contract is signed and agreed upon and that I should receive that contract within 24 hours. 24 hours came and went without a contract. I sent an email asking if it was time to settle up or sign a contract, I received no response. After day 3, I contacted the company that recommended this contractor to me to let them know that the work didn't get done and my money was gone. I immediately got a threatening voice mail from the contractor telling me that I better never damage his name and that he was going to call my insurance company to say I didn't need the work they paid me to get done. He told the insurance company that the work needed to be done and an insurance adjuster came on behalf of the insurance company and took pictures of the damage. Now I have to live with this damage due to him having a major chunk of my money and my materials. I contacted the Police but they said this was a civil matter and to contact the civil court. I contacted the court and they told me that if he didn't show it would be an automatic admission of guilt. An attorney told me, and the court confirmed, that if he didn't pay me I could spend more money and time chasing him to pay me. This would cost me too much money and there still isn't any guarantee I would get my money back. Please beware of contractors who do not give you an estimate or show you a license and insurance. Make sure you check their name and company with the licensing board. And don't give them any money, I have now learned that if you are asked for money, especially a large sum of money, to get the work started, then that contractor isn't good enough to do the work because they should have funds to cover the cost of materials before they take on the job.
