The worst day of anyones life typically involves moving and for some reason I'm a glutton for punishment. I had hired movers before and SWORE by it! It's worth EVERY PENNY!! Well, I have learned my lesson; when it comes to movers, dont be cheap. I had originally hired a company based in LA, they were scheduled to arrive at 10am on a Sunday. At 1030, when I hadnt heard from them, I started freaking out. I called and emailed them, but of course, no response. Finally, I started calling around to see if anyone could do a same day move on a Sunday. Of course everyone said no. My sister started looking on Craigslist and found City Movers.
We called to get the details, they said they were licensed and insured. Larry advised he would call when he was on his way. Which when he did, said he was bringing a woman to help with the move, but assured me she was a strong woman.
When they arrived, this little troll gets out of the truck. (I am not trying to be mean, literally, that's what he looked like). He comes inside to asess the move and to talk pricing. He tells me it will be $65/ hour, I need to pay 3 hours up front and he's counting the 30 min it took him to drive to my place. I told him I dont feel comfortable handing over $195 and he agrees to take half. Then he starts telling me he expects water, cups and burgers.
I told him I dont have cups (DUH, they are PACKED), but he is welcome to any water. He starts getting really agressive and I told him I didnt feel comfortable and wanted my money back. Of course he becomes even more aggressive and starts yelling at me. I start crying and telling him he's scaring me. My sister tried talking to him, but he wouldnt even acknowledge her and kept saying he couldnt speak to her because he wasn't doing business with her.
Finally, we both calm down and agree for him to move me. Now, my sister had called one of her friends to come over and thank goodness she did. If we were only going to rely on Lew the troll and the woman, I'd still be moving. He packed all the boxes in no problem, but when it came to my larger furniture, it was getting dragged all over the place, even ripping a small whole in my couch. Being that I had used movers before, I know how it's supposed to be properly done. He was a nutcase and had no clue what he was doing. I was also super irritated because we were all helping! That is not why you hire movers! You hire movers to sit back and watch someone else do the work.
Throughout the whole thing he was super angy and kept yelling at the woman. At one point I asked her if this was her only job and she started telling me about her house cleaining business. When I asked her how much he charged per hour, he snapped at us that we weren't allowed to discuss it. He was SO rude to everyone throughout the whole day.
When we got to my new place, I wanted them out of here as fast as possible, so I paid him the rest of the money I owed and we started to unload the truck. He reminded me that tips are typical, but I should give him all the money for the woman as well. Unfortunately I didnt have a chance to slip her a $20, otherwise I would have made sure she had something.
City Movers is the WORST moving company and probably the worst company I've ever dealt with. Whoever is in charge needs to have a long conversation about how customers should be treated. I definitely learned my lesson that there are some things not to be cheap on.
