I became involved with Darren Fox and Ocean Legends during September 2010. I had gone there with the idea of taking a video course. I liked the store and the employees and started to dive with them. Darren started to make his Rebreather sales pitch to me and I told him that I was interested in taking the class.
I explained to him that the money that I was spending was money that I had saved to make my retirement more meaningful.
It's a shame that my dealings with Ocean Legends would have a negative effect on me.
I'm a former US Soldier who is 100% disabled due to injuries that occurred during my military service. My dealings with Ocean Legends greatly increased my problems with my PTSD and Major Depression . This is what happened.
The week before Christmas of 2010 I went into Ocean Legends to buy my books for the Rebreather Course when the employee (Greg Hunter ) asked me if I wanted to take the Rebreather Advanced Course, and I told him that I wasn't interested at that time. We got into a conversation about diving and he handed me my Books and the receipt for what I thought that I was signing it for the Rebreather Books. Two days later when I went to get money for Christmas shopping for my family, I had $680.00 taken out of the account. I went to Central Pacific Bank and complained and they told me that I should ask for the money back from Ocean Legends. I did that and they told me that the money couldn't refunded. I explained to them that that money was for Christmas and I needed it make. Fox called me Christmas Eve and told me that there was no way that the money would be refunded. This was more or less of the beginning of the end with my dealings with Ocean Legends. Every time when Fox told me that that I had to buy another piece of equipment, which was far above the cost that he had told me originally. I would tell him to take it out of the $680.00 that they had taken for the Advanced Course. He would get angry and tell me that there are no refunds on any courses..
I can't go into this any longer. Darren Fox and Ocean Legends destroyed my self respect. That is a lot worse than him taking the money from me. I'm asking for help to get at least something back. I'm willing to provide my VA Medical Records and there are VA Doctors who will testify about the pain and suffering that Ocean Legends caused me. I never was able to complete the course because I now have a condition where I have seizures .
I asked Fox for some kind of refund and he refused. I'm out several thousand dollars.
Darren as an Instructor has a habit of talking down to and embarrassing his students in front of others. He has a very quick temper in a complaint to the Honolulu BBS. he slandered me several times saying that I was rude to Staff. I always treated his staff with dignity and respect. I would usually tip the Divemaster twenty dollars.
He stated to the BBS. that I had been kicked out of every Dives Club on Oahu which was upsetting to me. Diving is a sport of honesty because of safety and trust.
How can anyone trust some one who is going to lie like that. He told the BBS that he tried to reach me for months to retake the course, but he never called me. The reason I didn't finish it the first time is because I was so upset when he embarrassed me in front of another student about being laten in paying for regulators repairs. I know that he's an expert and well known and he acts like it. But that doesn't give him the right to treat people like crap. His Staff at the time with the exception of Greg were great and he has a nice shop.m The boat he uses is a Cattle Boat, which is usually over crowded, but that is the norm for Oahu. L" Please don't judge his employees because of the employer. I had wished that Mr Fox's morals and personality would have been as high as his knowledge of diving. I lost most of my retirement money and worst a lot of my own self respect due to my dealings with this man. The Veterans Administration suggested that I put this behind me, and that's why I waited so long to do this complaint. People have to stand up to Bullies like Fox and show him that he needs to be a decent human being if you are going to deal with others. If what I wrote prevents another Veteran like myself from going through what I did then this all will be worth iy. If you are an Attorney and would be interested in taking my case let me know.
