3 Years ago I rented a cottage on Tait Street. Unit #1. The wires in the ceiling were exposed, there was a dirty old refrigerator and stove, a horrid stained blue shag rug in the bedroom and a bathroom with rotted out floor - in fact with a gapping hole covered by an old piece of plywood. However, it was a block from the beach and I could see the potential. When I asked the girl (Frank and Joyce Dudas' daughter) if I could fix it up, she looked at me like I had two heads and asked, "why would you want to do that - it's a surfer crash pad!" But she shrugged and said do what you want. So, before I moved in I ordered the stove and the refrigerator taken out, as well as the run in the bedroom. When I viewed my new home the next time, there was no replacement stove, or rug and the bathroom floor was still rotted. So I hired a handyman from work to replace the bathroom floor for $600. which Mr. Dudas agreed to. I then paid for the vinyl stick on tiles for the bedroom and bathroom. I also paid for the mini blinds and the new stove and I thought I would be there forever. I paid my rent every month on time. I added a solar light outside the door to avoid falling in the dark. I had the handyman come back and insulate around the front door wihere there was a 1/2 gap all around. then the roaches came and I had to hire an exterminator to spray once a month. It got to be too expensive and I knew Dudas' wouldn't pay, so I used Boric Acid and that did the trick. The exterminators had set a huge rat trap on one of the open beams and I didn't see any rats until last Octor when one got caught in the trap. When I contacted Mr. Dudas and asked for an exterminator it was a Friday - he said they would come on Monday. No one came. When I contronted Mr. Dudas he showed up with mice poison and told me to put that in the ceiling. At that time I realized I needed to move. I gave Mr. Dudas more than 30 days notice. I cleaned out the place and expected that he would mail me my deposit. The first time I asked - no response. The second time - no response. The third time I got a frantic phone call from him telling me that he had forgotten to tell Joyce to mail it and it would go out right away. Never received. I texted him. He responded in the mail. Never came. I texted him again. He responded in the mail I said when???? He said today. Never came. I have now sent him a demand letter and will sue him in Small Claims Court. What he's done is strictly against the law. If I win and he still refuses to pay me, I will get a keeper from the Court to collect his rent and give me my portion. This is a warning to people who might rent from Mr. and Mrs. Dudas. Beware. They will take your money, raise your rent and not do anything about your complaints and laugh in your face when you ask for your deposit. There ought to be a law against people like this owning property as landlords.
