I posted a request for an electrician through home adviser. I was contacted by Mister Sparky and set up an appointment. The Technician arrived on time and and appeared very professional.
I explained the problem, loss of power to kitchen outlets. He began by removing all of the outlets in the kitchen checking for voltage. After explaining everything that was on that circuit (garage door openers, AC blower, etc.) He proceeded into the attic to check a junction box. Finding nothing, he pulled the cover off of the load center.
He concluded that the circuit breaker was bad and asked if i wanted replaced.
I said yes and was presented with a bill for $452.00. $79 service fee, $279 diagnostic fee and another $100 to replace the circuit breaker ($15 at Lowes).
In conversations, he told me that Phase B was going bad in the breaker box. I inquired about the cost to replace the box. From his binder, he said the price would be $2700.00 plus inspection fee. I asked how long it would take to do the job. He said "about 4 hours."
The cost of a load center fully populated with all new breakers is less than $300. From the service I received and the quote I got, I figure Mister Sparkey charges about $500 per hour. This seams a little excessive to me.
We called Mister Sparky to come out to fix a chandelier that had blown in our kitchen. After looking at it, he told us it needed to be rewired. He then asked to check our fuse box panel. He told us that a breaker in the panel was melting and that we needed to replace the whole panel. Cost $3,149
He then said that we had to get our smoke alarms changed out so they were all wired together. Cost $3,000. Total for the $6,149.
Thirty minutes before we had this done, the power comapny came out to turn off the power and happened to ask what we were having done and my husband reviewed the items and cost with them. They strongly suggested getting a second opinion, this did not seem right to them.
Called another electrician. He came over this moring and he evaluated panel and moved the bad breaker to a vacant spot in the panel and said there is nothing wrong with the panel. He also inspected our current smoke alarms and said there was no need to replace them either. He is aware of how Mister Sparky upsells you on everything but this was a downright rip off if we had gone ahead with them. I have since heard this same story over and over.
We saved $6,149 today and would like to let people know about this company and how they operate.
