Me and a friend had went through the Merit real estate company to rent a house. After I had put up a $1250.00 deposit the friend bailed out on me. I called Merit and was told that I would still be responseable for payments on the house. The person that I talked to said that she understood what I was going through but then stated that if i did not stay in the house for the length of the lease agreement that I would be in breach of the contract and possibly be taken to court. I went a head and lived in the house for the whole year never late on the rent and always keeping the house clean and the yard maintained. In fact when I first moved in me and a friend had to clean the whole house and yard due to the extent of filth that had been left behind by the real estate company. The basement carpet was stained with cat urine and I could never get the smell out. The whole back yard was full of trash and the grass and weeds were grown up really high. The deck was all rotten and the onwer did come out once to so call fix it, but only to replace a couple of loose nails. The bedroom carpets were stained and torn up and the whole upstairs had a smell like something had died. I was promised before moving in that everything would be fixed and cleaned. Boy did they lie. So then i was really srewed over when i had went to move out of the house. I paid out of my own pocket to have the carpets cleaned and I had cleaned the whole house from top to bottom. I turned in my keys and receipt for the carpet cleaning like they required but then after two months of waiting for my deposit check I get it minus a big chunk. They sent me a list of everything that had been charged to me and what do you know?!! They had gotten the carpets recleaned and were trying to charge me nearly $400.00 for it!!! It was from their own real estate people walking through to show the house and tracking in dirt. Then to top off everything, the deposit check had name of the friend that had bailed on me and i had told Merit a few times to take her off of the lease and had been reassurred that it would be taken care of. So I went to Merit hoping that they would cut me another check with my name only but of course they argured that they could not and pretty much told me good luck with trying to cash it. Me and my friend went to the address that was listed on the carpet cleaning reciept for the business that Merit had used and there was nothing there but a subdivison. We tried calling the phone number and on one every picked up. It totally looked like a fake business. Do not use the Merit company. They are crooks, very rude and do not try to help you in any way. It takes months to even get them out to the propertys to fix anything. Horrible company!!!!
