Last year (2013) I had packed my truck with all of my smaller possessions as well as my kids clothes and toys, as we were moving from Ca.. I had put almost all of my 20 years of military items and things I had collected from around the world in the truck including handmade swords and knives from craftsmen not machine made. Many of these did not have receipts-one reason being that they were over 10 years old. I filed the claim in 2013 and no action was taken by them for that entire year, I guess because the lady working my case went on maternity leave and let the case drop. I was finally able to get it re-opened! I did not base any value of my items on emotions and had spent several months going on line and in stores taking pictures and values of like items at replacement cost! After all was said and done it only came to about 10 thousand dollars (sad, I know), but Mercury in the ultimate face slap sent me a check for about 1/3 of the value, stating depreciation and no receipts as justification for it! What store can you buy new items at a depreciated value? Who has receipts for items they purchased even 6 months ago? If I had been claiming 100k, I could have understood, but 10k--really? So that's what it's like the get ripped off twice. What is the point of paying for insurance for that--keep in mind the deductible was also 1 thousand dollars on top of that. They had the chance to be the good guy here but chose to be the second b***hole to steal from me! I had tried to be accurate and honest and this was the reward--my advice drop them or if you have to file a claim jack it up as high as you can. I have not cashed their sorry check but did call and sent them emails about this and they have not even bothered to respond. Do not get homeowners coverage through these guys for any reason! I should mention that the items that I did have receipts for and were still new in the box got devalued that same as the ones without so what the h*** was the point anyway!
