I wish I could give a zero for stars. My wife and I drove to Paterson from Bridgeport yesterday to purchase a 2000 VW Beetle Luxury Cars had advertised. The agreed upon price was $2500. The ad stated it was a great car with mostly highway miles fully loaded, etc. In person they said the same thing, said it'd been checked by a mechanic and cleared, and we took it for a test drive. It made it around the block just fine. So we purchased the car. On the way home we noticed the odometer and dash wasn't working and about 20 miles out the car started shaking like crazy, there was a loud bang, a bright flash of flame from beneath, and a lot of smoke. The car died on the side of I-95 North by exit 4A. I had to call 911 to get help.
Thankfully we had another car to drive with us. It cost $140 to tow it off the highway and another $220 to tow it back to CT. The second tow truck driver said it looked like the transmission blew.
I tried several times to get Luxury Car to refund our money. We have a copy of the email where they stated if we bring it back they'd give us a full refund. But they wanted us to pay to tow it back and we spent all our money on a car that doesn't work. When I said they need to pay to tow the car and to refund our money or we'd be referring the case to a lawyer, they said go ahead and sue us. This is the same dealership that two years ago paid $66,000 in fines to NJ for this very thing. I've tried several more times to get a refund but they're determined to not refund our money and now claim the best they can do is fix the car. But they still won't pay the towing fees and have no guarantee they'll actually fix it. All we want is our money back. They knowingly sold us a dangerous car that could've killed us. Breaking down on 95 in the Bronx at night is EXTREMELY dangerous.
Having them refuse to honor their own offer to give us a full refund for the car and pay to tow it back to them should tell you what kind of people these are. I wish I could have said we had problems, they took care of it right away, stand up guys. But they didn't. They basically said not our problem, you pay to bring it back and we'll look at it. What's that do for me? And to face triple damages if I choose to sue them is just nuts. I think they're counting on the fact lawyers cost money, and they do, but the very first money we get is going right to the first reputable lawyer we find. We've already got emails and calls out there. Is it worth it to make the quick $2500 to wind up having to pay three times that plus fines plus attorney's fees after the fact? Doesn't it make more sense to do the right thing?
