December 19th I purchased a 2002 Ford F150 Fx4 from a third party. Because there was only ONE (1) key available, micro chipped to vehicle computer, we were aarequired to duplicate through a local Ford dealer only.
We then contacted Lithia Ford of Roseburg requesting two (2) keys be made and programmed to existing alarm system. We were quoted $70 for the pair and agreed to price.
Two hours later, while waiting in service lounge, we were informed by Taylin Stephenson, service writer, that Lithia did not have keys in stock. We would have to return vehicle and plan to leave with them 4 hours. Gee, thanks for making us sit two hrs before telling us something they should have known upfront! Its a FORD.
While awaiting an appointment date, we drove the vehicle out of town on freeway about 100 miles round trip. The vehicle was running awful, as if only operating on 2 of the 8 cylinders.
The "Check Engine" light came on, started flashing, and went back and forth solid/flashing all the way home. The engine was sputtering and jerking while driving at any speed. Worse at speeds above 45mph. At this time we felt the vehicle "Unsafe" to drive, especially with our young child.
I contacted the third party auto sales where we purchased. He was very concerned and asked that I bring to him for test drive. Unfortunately, the issue appeared to be "Intermittent" and did not repeat itself.
When Lithia Ford contacted me next day to bring vehicle in for "KEY" programming $70.00, I informed them of the check engine light and associated issues. Taylin said we'll look at the codes and test drive to diagnose. When I returned in 4 hours to pick up as prommised , "They were still unable to duplicate keys and program, nor were they able to detect any engine issues. Now Taylin stated we would have to leave the vehicle with them 24hrs " Just For Key Duplication". My wife then decided if the vehicle is going to be in shop that long, she wanted a 200,000 mile factory service performed. She was told they would perform a "Free" Code Check, Electrical systemsn for the check engine light issue (Invoice quotes "Free" on first page, yet we were billed $115.00 on second page). Wife also wanted them to test "Sun roof" as it appears to not function properly and leaks badly during rainy days. Taylin said he would have them look at it, did not mention we were going to be billed $115.00!
As I dropped vehicle off at Lithia Ford Service Bay, Taylin began typing up service order very silently. Then I asked what codes did he come up with on diagnosis? He said same code you gave me from your code reader: "Multiple Misfires" all Cylinders". I asked what causes the misfires and he stated "Your due for spark plug change based on mileage", most likely the issue. I asked for a quote and he said $350.00 because they have to tare half the manifold apart to get to the plugs. But if we agree to do the plugs today, they'll do a courtesy stress test and full diagnostic upon completion to insure the problem is fixed. So she agreed to have it done.
Approximtely 1830 wife receives a call from Taylin informing her they found a burnt out coil ignition coil on cylinder #6 that needs replacing, along with new valve cover gasekets and intake gasket to fix leaks. NOTE! There were no lkeaks on this vehicle as it was inspected prior to purchase 10 days ago!
When my wife asked wwhat the new cost was he stated " Around $1300.00! We went from $70 key duplication to $1300 repair overnight!
Here's the "Kicker" and chief reason for complaint.
I picked up the vehicle on 28 Jan, read the invoice briefly, signed the "invoice" and wrote a check for $1192.35. For some reason we got a 10% discount, didn't ask for, nor wanted. Original bill $995.04 Labor and $329.partsrts- $1324.84 total. I got in the vehicle, headed home (17 miles out of town) and no sooner got on freeway when the vehicle began acting similar to same problems originally but worse! I didn't even feel safe driving the vehicle! Upon getting home, I called Taylin and explained the issue but did not trust Lithia with my vehicle for any repair no matter how minor any further.
I then contacted the dealer I purchased from, and asked for a "Good Mechanic" recommendation. When he asked why he said "We tow more vehicles out of Lithia Ford than into"! He owns Roseburg Towing- Go figure.
He sent me to Walker Brothers Auto Repair in Roseburg, I explained the situation to the owner, and he said " Leave it with us overnight and we'll go through it bumper to bumper tomorrow.
They called next day around 12:45pm and said the diagnostic machine was showing 48 Thousand Misfires on Cylinder #8. When they went to check the cylinder, they discovered the coil was "Fried and held on by a twist/tie"! His quote to repair and replace $212.
The invoice I signed and received from Lithia Ford clearly states " Performed a relative compression test and test drove the vehicle found no concerns"!
I have the parts they claimed to fix and didn't, along with statement from Walker Brothers Mechanic that the described service from Lithia Ford "Was Not Performed"!
