We were long time horse racing fans looking forward to our first Kentucky Derby. We made a trip to the Churchill Downs ticket window to insure that we got authentic tickets instead of buying them from a third party ticket seller. We purchased ""Standing Room Only"" Tickets for $50.00.
We paid $17 to ride in either an old city bus or a yellow school bus from the remote parking to the Downs.
When we got to the Kentucky Derby, we were told we could not see the horses or the actual race, but we could watch it on a $7 Million dollar large screen TV. We were blocked from all the viewing stands and designated to the infield or the concession stands. The infield view was also blocked by portable box seating and tents. It was very clear, any view of the track or the horses, was strictly off limits to $50 ticket holders.
When we go through the trouble of going to Churchill Downs and buying a ticket to the Kentucky Derby, we expect to see the Kentucky Derby. Racing fans go to the Derby to see the horses, not to watch TV. We actually went home an hour later and watched it on our own TV.
If they pulled this stunt at NASCAR or Yankee Stadium, fans would be outraged. The Kentucky Derby is a world class sports event, like watching the Masters. Racing fans were exploited while the Downs accommodated the 1%. It wouldn't kill them to install risers on the infield and in the paddock, so that they can accommodate all the fans. It took the joy out of the event and killed our love of the Derby.
There was no Code of Conduct, trash was everywhere, and people were pounding on 5 gallon plastic drums for entertainment. It was hard ot tell the difference between the Derby and Spring Break. Take the kegger to the University of Louisville Parking Lot and leave Derby fans to enjoy the day in style.
