In 2000, I was a single mother of two and was curious about furthering my education. So I called Katharine Gibbs School and made an appointment to speak with an advisor. I asked the advisor to give me a tour and also speak to me about financial opportunities and not to put me in a financial position that I could not handle.
At first she told me about the certificate program that cost approximately $15,000.00 and if I wanted my Associates degree, it would cost approximately $28,000.00, but I would continue to school in Montclair, NJ, for the degree. I thought that was extremely too costly, but she said I could file for a student loan and after her calculations she gave me, the balance I would have to pay out of my pocket but, not until after 6 months of graduation or until I begin working at whatever company they will help me land. I was still unsure if I should apply until she said I could get financial grants that I don't have to pay back and whatever balance was left, then that is what I would have to pay.
I said OK, but was still unsure if I made the right decision. I have several industrial parks in my residential are where I resided at that time. So before and after I graduated in 2003, I requested a letter of recommendation from the advisor again and again. All she was doing for me, was talking about jobs in New York. I told her I wanted to be close to my children's school in case of an emergency. When I called her again about a letter of recommendation so I could walk my resumes to employers I found out that my advisor was no longer with them.
I contacted the Dean's assistant to explain my situation she told me that they were not going to do the job search for me, that I had to do it myself. I told her I've been doing it myself and all I ask for is a letter of recommendation and she said she would get back to me but, she did not. I called her again but some other worker answered the phone and I explained to her about a letter of recommendation and they had the nerve to tell me that they did not get their brochures out to that area yet.
I was so upset all I could do was hang up the phone and wonder how the hell am I going to start paying my loans without going into deferment or forebearance. It is 2014, and I'm still with no job and they just keep on capitalizing interest on my deferements and forebearnaces.
Also, one day I received a large envelope in the mail from Wachovia stating that my identity was stolen where my student loans were with that bank. There was a huge amount of clients 750,000 people included because of a scam inside of that bank.
So here I am with no job, stolen identity, and loans out my a**.
