I have been a Practicing, licensed practical nurse since 1996, through an accredited school and continue to take CEU classes over the years. In 2009, I wanted to take the AAS in Applied science, for Medical Office Management, as I wanted to move forward in my profession as a Nursing Home administrator. I really didn't understand why,I needed to take English, math, science ETC: Over again, when the math and science , I use everyday as a nurse. So, for 3 semesters, I had to pay for an education, already included and completed with my first degree. Is this wrong???
Kaplan university charged me outrageous amounts such as a technology fee every class that alone was ridiculous. One amount for the school year would have been fine. And they also didn't give me all the Pell grants that I was approved for and when I asked them about it they said that k get the amount that they see I need. It's a Pell grant in my name that isn't your choice. I believe that completely ripped me off and I want the money that I was supposed to get or they pay for the schooling I did and drop my school loans.
Where do I start. Well i was doing dead end jobs not happy with my life and wanted to do something different.. I set up an appointment with a student advisor and was excited about signing up and I felt proud.. So I'm going over all the classes and getting excited about what I'll be learning.. I apply and apply and still nothing.. I go to career services and all they do is spruce up my resume and say here some jobs go home and apply and good luck.. I did all that already that's why I went there for help.. After a year and a half I worked minimum wage jobs and I couldn't pay my loans and i had bills to pay.. I fell on financial hardship but fed loans didn't care and wouldn't help.. I was pretty much losing my mind and getting stressed out.. I graduated in 2010 and I still can't get a job in my field.. I feel like a failure and I'm sad that my hard work didn't pay off.. I was so proud of my degree and what I accomplished.. I even tried to go back to get my bachelors degree so I could get a better job and finally start paying my debt.. Kaplan lied and said I owed $2100 and they locked me out of class told me I had to get a personal loan and pay them or I couldn't continue .. Tried to call my student advisor no answer tried to email no answer.. I had no answers to why I had owed that money.. They also took the money for my bachelors degree and never told my loan place that I didn't finish my bachelors degree.. I now owe for a degree I don't have.. I'm Trying to start a nice future with my family but I have this hanging over me.. I'm trying to give my kids everything I never had in life.. Why can't people like me get forgiveness like all the teachers and nurses and doctors they get there loans forgiven.. Welcome to Kaplan University Admissions. All chats may be monitored and recorded. My name is 'Mary', how may I help you?
Mary: Hello adam. How may I help you?
adam: I had some questions about your credit system
Mary: ok,
adam: what is the amount of credits you have to recieve for a applied science degree
Mary: There are 90 credits in this degree
adam: and how many for a bachelors
Mary: 180 credits
adam: why is that amount higher than some other schools, or community colleges
Mary: Our courses are 5-6 credits each
Mary: Typically, as a full time student, you can earn an associate's degree in about 2 years and a bachelor's degree in about 4 years. Most of our undergraduate students start with 2 classes to make sure they can adjust to the workload. It's very important you understand that many courses, including those for the associate degree, are 5 credits per class. In other words, if you take two courses, that would be ten credits. But by definition, a full time student is one who takes 12 credits per term or two six credit courses.
adam: why are the courses 5 to 6 each when in other schools they are 3
Mary: We are on the quarter semester hour. Our terms are 10 weeks
adam: i dont understand how that would benefit me more than going to a school that would require less credit hours to get my degree. It seems to me that i am paying for more credit hours to recieve the same degree
adam: in one school that i need 60 credit hours, and take 3 hour classes at 220 a credit that is 660 per class. As to here I need 90 credit hours, and take 5 credit classes at 320 per credit which is 1600 per class. That is triple the amount.
adam: it seems to me that i am paying 3 times teh amount for the exact same degree. Is that wrong?
Mary: I don't know about other schools
Mary: Our tuition rate is based on credits, most courses are 5 or 6 credits each and varies by program, and may be adjusted up or down throughout your enrollment. The cost per credit hour is 371 dollars. We have a non refundable application fee of $45 which is currently being waived. There's a $200.00 technology fee assessed per term, in other words, every 10 weeks - not per course. The technology fee covers your internet support tools, online student support, internal email, access to the online library, and our nationwide communication system.
adam: lol
adam: so that means i am correct about what i said than
adam: if that is the case with the other schools
Mary: Please contact your advisor Devon Grant at 866-527-5268
adam: I have attended online college before and am in the process to enroll in classes that are starting in less than a week. But it seems to me that i am being highly over charged
adam: wow. this hasnt been informative at all
adam: im having real doubts about this school
adam: and even more now by you trying to forward me to someone else for answers
adam: So you have nothing else to say about my questions
Mary: Contact Devon he is your advisor. Or I can transfer you to a Financial aid rep to discuss your plan.
adam: lol. No thanks i am realizing that this school is a complete scam and i will be posting all this information on the web for everyone to see
Mary: Kaplan's courses are 5-6 credits each since we are on the Quarter semester hour
adam: your not very helpful at all which is really scary
Mary: I am just stating the facts Adam
adam: LOLOLOL
adam: ok.
adam: this was a great wakeup call i am glad i saw this before enrolling
adam: thank you have a great day
Mary: You too.

I was a student with Kaplan on campus for my first degree, and then online for my second and for the start of the third. I had no problems, except for having trouble getting the same answer to one question from the financial aid office. It seemed that every time I called to ask the same or similar question, a completely different response would be given. However, it wasn't until the final degree that things became confused. Apparently, the financial aid adviser took it upon himself to assume I was going to be taking classes that added up to the same amount of credits as the degree before. The classes I registered for did not add up, and before it was "caught" they had already paid it out. So, they "paid back the loan company and then had to bill me for the rest, as I was responsible for not noticing the discrepency in credits versus financial aid." That is not correct. As a student, I am fully aware of how much financial aid I am given in an academic year. I understand how much the courses cost and how much the package is as it is explained to me when we go over our financial aid award letter over the phone prior to the term starting. There were no discrepencies during that conversation. This was THEIR mistake, not mine. I should not have been responsible. But what choice did I have? I am a single mother, and I had no job at the time. So, I told them I would pay half with whatever reimbursement came the next term, and complete the bill the term after that. I did pay the first half online, but could not pay the second. I tried paying a small amount, but that wasn't good enough either. They blocked me from classes, and in order to move on with my education and find work, I had to withdraw from classes in Sept 2014. No one at the school told me I would be unable to obtain my official transcripts after withdrawing even with a balance owed. In fact, they gave me instructions on how to obtain them and how much they cost. A week ago, when I went to get them for the new school I started at, (which is incredible, by the way), I was told I could not get my transcripts because "my account is on hold." So, now I cannot continue my education with the new school. I cannot get certified for any other position within my degree fields in my state because they request official transcripts for the certification process. Therefore, I am now left with nothing but more than $75,000 in student loan debt. Why? Because someone in the financial aid office made a mistake. I am told by my new school to seek legal counsel. I was shown this webpage, but see that these entries are from 2013, so I am not very hopeful. I saw the web post on FB about Kaplan being investigated for bad business practices, "preying on the poor," etc. I have nothing now. I have less than nothing. I am going to have to take minimum wage jobs despite having two degrees and the ability to continue on and finish a masters degree, simply because Kaplan chose to make a mistake and not allow a student to obtain their own personal academic records. I would like to sue them for this. I would like to study education law now that I have all this time to, so I can figure out if it can be done. This isn't fair what they've done, and it isn't fair what they've done to anyone else.
If anyone has any idea of what I can do, please let me know. Good luck to everyone.
Kaplan University Student Aid used up all my students loans and once I didn't have any other money to continue my education, they took it upon themselves to supposedly lend me the extra money I needed to finish getting my BA without my knowledge. Once I was done with school they send me a bill for 9,000 dollars that I owed them and it was due immediately. I didn't have that kind of money nor I do now. I offered to make payments, but while I do that, I have yet to received my degree. I not only owe Kaplan University 9k I also owe the department of education 40K. i haven't been being able to apply for a job on the career I chose so I can make more money or better money so I can start paying my loans because Kaplan University is holding my degree until I pay what I owe them, "No degree no better pay, no better pay no money, no money no payments..... and it goes on like that. How Kaplan expect to get pay if I can't get my degree to get a better job!! That is a complete ripped off. So i guess If I get to pay them in 10 years paying the minimum I can afford now, I'll be getting my degree in 10 years.... What should I do?
The school was charging me after I dropped out. I never received the help they promised. When I notified the school that they are charging me for courses that I did not do and plus I dropped out. They never corrected the problem. They messed my credit up.
I hate this school so much and is really tired of their financial aid department ripping off students money, they will sit on your money until they feel like they want to release it to it and other schools that my friends attend said they get their stipends right after it is posted not only do they receive a paper check but they have debit cards. You would think this school would even give the students that option but they don't. Instead they want to be assholes and collect interest off of your money, it took me awhile to catch on but now I feel this is a very shitty school and hate I ever attended it in the first place, this school it self has the most complaints, so if you thinking about attending don't, the professors have no life, they pile alot of homework on you and expect for it to be done in a week when some of us is married, have kids and work long hours, it's what school is about but these professors are ridiculous, anytime a professor sit online during seminar and tell student they have a six page paper due and some of you won't pass....it's time to rethink your school and their shitty ass professors. I have graduated and now taking up another degree but like I said Financial aid sucks, and are super whack.
I went to Kaplan and before I started I was told money would not be needed until i graduated, so prior to graduation they "claimed I owed them $ 3000. so when I told them I did not have that, they withdrew me, but I still owe student loans for a partial education with no degree, they never told me I would have to pay if the semester went over 10 credits, they simply said at least 10 credits was necessary to get financial aid, i feel lied to and cheated I was 14 credits away
I went to Kaplan university in davenport Iowa. I went for two semesters then they wanted more money, So I had to drop out and now I have college loan I can't pay. My name is Christopher My City: Davenport State: Iowa
I attended Kaplan University 2006+ and received an AA & BS in Information Tech. After paying over $100,000 and still unable to obtain full time employment in my field of study. I had to take out additional loans to pay for classes. I was new to online learning and had no idea that what they were charging was over other online schools.
As I mentioned above I have not been able to obtain employment in my field of study. Since learning that Kaplan was not accredited as they sad they were, and recent lawsuits I see that companies do not consider Kaplan degrees as proper training for an IT position.
All I have left are IT books and a huge financial aid debt. If there is a class lawsuit I would very much like to be added. I shouldn't have paid anything for a useless degree.
Many time when calling Kaplan’s financial aid dept. I was given the run around. I feel I was overcharged for classes. My husband who was also a student at the time was lied to about how much student aid he had. It resulted in unnecessary charges as he had to drop a class because they didn’t tell him he had no aid available until mid-semester. He was still charged for the class but was unable to complete it.
I have had many occasions where I have had to fight just to get the instructors to follow the syllabus and this resulted in failing a class once. I was able to rectify that situation however when it came to financial aid no one listened. Many time I was tile I had one amount then another. There were time when they could not even tell me what the charges were for. Each time I called the financial aid dept. it was a different story about my aid.
Copy of Letter sent to Kaplan Greivance Dept, I have contacted the Attorney General as well. I was pursuing my Associates Degree in Applied Science – Medical Assisting. I began this program September of last year and the first 2 semesters I was very proud that I was on the Deans List. However, in April 2014 I hurt my back. I emailed the professors of the classes and informed them of what was going on. I stated that I had been to the ER 4xs, spinal injections and a Drs visit where their office referred me to a NeuroSurgeon. I had fell behind on a couple of units and asked if they could give me 2 weeks to catch it all up (per the syllabus). During this time I actually spoke with my Advisor and she told me to try and complete the units and if I couldn’t, I could take again next semester. I had to end of taking again next semester because I couldn’t get into any of the assignments that I was trying to make up. I had to pay $3880 again to take these classes, which I passed. It was very difficult because the pain was excruciating.
At the end of August 2014, I stated 2 new classes and found out that I had to have emergency surgery on Sept 4. I had dealt with this pain for 5 months and the MRI revealed a vertebrae had slipped and was pushing into my spinal canal, pinching the sciatic nerve and putting pressure on the vertebrae below and causing a herniation of the disc. I had trouble sitting, standing, walking, and all everyday things. I could only lay on my right side, as the trouble was on the left side of my body from lower back down. At the time of the MRI August, the vertebrae was pushing into my spinal cord 2+layers, which I was told is severe. In less than 30 days it had slipped to 3+ layers and my Neurosurgeon said he couldn't wait anymore, I had to have surgery ASAP. I contacted my professor on Sept 6, 2 days after surgery, and explained that I couldn’t sit up and asked for time to complete my studies. Again I was given 2 days. I emailed my advisor, and got a out of the office message. Then another advisor responded to the email I had sent my advisor and asked if I wanted to take a leave of absence. I said no, I would like to make up my studies and continue. I didn’t hear anything else from this person until they began emailing me about attendance, as well as the professor and my advisor. It was as if no one was on the same page and I had to keep telling the same scenario repeatedly. I found out 3 weeks after my surgery that my surgeon stated that I would not be able to fulfill the physical requirements of a medical assistant. At that time, I emailed my advisor, who was still out of the office. I called the advising number and spoke to an advisor, at great length, and we had decided that as soon as the unit was over, I would transfer to the Medical Coding and Billing program. She stated that if I couldn’t catch the anatomy class up that I could take it again next semester and that financial aid would cover it. I wanted to confirm this so she transferred me to financial aid and I spoke at great length with this department as well. She instructed me to file a grievance for the way I had been treated, she also confirmed that my financial aid and loans would cover switching to these studies.
After the conversation, I emailed the email address for the advising department and informed them that I would be switching to Medical Coding and Billing and that I would not be completing the present 2 courses, I would take Anatomy over. Within 2 weeks I received an email and a letter stating that my loans had been terminated, as well as my financial aid, and I had been removed from the Medical Assisting program. I called the advising line that day and spoke to a gentleman in the advising department. I told him the whole long drawn out story and he became rude and irate with me. Told me that it didn't matter if I had surgery, maybe I should answer my phone a little more and maybe this wouldn't have happened. I was told I needed to quit blaming the university when its my fault this happened. He said there was nothing he could do, I was terminated and would have to re enroll, if allowed to. Before this 25 minute conversation was over, I ended up hanging up on him.
Never in my life have I been treated the way he acted. I am 44 years old, not 5. Immediately following I called the financial department, only to be told there was nothing they could do I need to talk to admissions. Admissions said I had to start all over. I spoke with a re-admissions advisor who supposedly was working on paperwork to readmit me. He said it would take a while but he was gonna try to get me readmitted by Nov 4. He gave me his phone number and told me if I saw this number to answer, he would be calling to proceed with making my computer was compatible and sending docs to sign. Last week I received a letter stating I owe the college $1500. For what? The university received both the loan disbursement and the fed aid disbursement in Sept. Then I was removed. I have spent a year with this University and I am appaulled at the lack of compassion in your advising department. You either cant get ahold of anyone or they email you and act like they have never spoke to you. The rudeness of the last gentleman was enough to confirm my decision to contact the Attorney Generals Office in Ohio. I feel I have been ripped off and discriminated against because I couldn't, for a time period, physically do my studies. The only thing I ever asked for was 2 weeks to catch up – twice.
Now I'm in debt for a student loan and removed from a program. I have also reported the Lab Fees/Technology fees that I have paid each semester. I paid a $900 fee when I started the program, when I questioned it, I was told this was a one time fee that had to be paid. Yet, I have paid $200 each semester after. Also, that in the beginning I was given a financial printout that my degree would cost $24000, by the time I am finished it will be well over $38,000. I am currently in the process of admissions with a different college. I will not return to Kaplan, and I will go out of my way to let all of my friends whom are thinking about attending, to attend elsewhere.
Kaplan Unversity's financial aid department is the worst department of any school I have ever dealt with. I am a current graduate student finishing up my degree. Initially when I enrolled they were on the ball and I got my stipend in week 4-5 of a 10 week course.
More recently however, they have really become horrendous. The counselors do not care, give scripted answers to your questions and delay as much as possible to earn interest off a loan that you are responsible for. My payment was scheduled for 9/26 or two weeks after the start of my class. It was then delayed until October 1st and then delayed again until October 8th which now represents the start of week 7 of a 10 week course. My fees were finally paid and when I asked about my stipend check I was told it would be mailed the end of this week which represents the end of week 8.
When I asked to speak to a supervisor, he told me that they have between 3 and 8 weeks to pay my fees and even though I confirmed with my lender they sent the fees to the school in week 3, Kaplan decides now to hold my money until the final hour of the 8 weeks to suck all the interest they can before I get my stipend. I told the representative that they are making money off of money that I have to pay back to the government. A point that they did not argue with.
Based solely on the financial aid department, I would never ever recommend Kaplan University to anyone. I am going to finish my Master's degree here and then choose another Univeristy for my 2nd Masters. One that has a financial aid department that does not feel students are a burden and is not interested in making money off of my student loans.
Kaplan University is a fraud, students beware. If you have been scammed by Kaplan, speak up to warn others. Kaplan should not be allowed an edu, it is misleading.
I have my A.S. degree in Criminal Justice and was looking to advance my eduation with a B.S. degree in Psy/Substance abuse. I work with Addicts and Alcohol already and know the field very well, but I figured an actually B.S. degree in Psy/Substance abuse would look lovely on my resume to my current employer now or future employers.
I was contacted by Eugenia Hester who painted a wonderful picture about Kaplan University. I went through the free application online and some common sense test which I passed; and what was holding me back from enrolling was my FAFSA aid I had to renewel for 2007-2008, After sending me to look for my tax papers that I had file for 2006, I got back on the phone and told her that I couldn't find anything cause I had just moved from Florida; so she gave me IRS number to ask for Gross Income, Adjusted gross income, tax paid, and any tax credit applied so she can have me enroll by Sunday Dec 2nd 2007. I was thinking that's wierd. She contacted Sat Dec 1st 2007 and she was pushing me to enroll and actually have me start my classes the next time. I'm glad I had some issue with my FAFSA or I would of been scamed.
Later on that night I couldn't sleep so I went online to do more research about the school. I decided to go to this website and check what student had experience with their school. That's when I discover the scam, fake degrees and so on...
I sent her an email, and it reads: Sun, 2 Dec 2007 23:33:42 -0800 (PST)

Eugenia I made some changes to the enrollment form, I put down the wrong SS# and changed my last name, and also change the high school name that I graduated from.

I spoke to a Lady in the admitting office about an Online Bachelor's Degree program
for the 2003 -2004(around this time) school year.
We spoke about 3 times then the next time we spoke she said,
I would not have to pay back the loan until after I finished the class.
I was surprised, because I'd never heard of that.
Anyway, it was only like $90 dollars to start with the application process.
I continued with my studes for about a year, when I started receiving a
bill for $200 every month.
I was only able to pay my rent at the time with my $9.00 an hour job,
so I was forced to not attend anymore.
I looked at the amount owed, my balance was no more than $12,000;
yesterday I was on credit karma reviewing my credit report and these are the figures
I see, which is what they are saying I still owe now ...
$7,114 to collection agency ECMC
$4.892 to collection agency ECMC
$4,572 to collection agency ECMC
$3,048 to collection agency ECMC
Now, I'm Not a math genius or anything; but I believe this add up to over $8,000 more
than when I stopped attending.
I smell a fat rat.
I didn't even get any books with this online class, only like 3 or 4 paperback books.
There should be something done about this.
This is ridiculous.
Has anyone been in a similar situation, and is there any information like web addresses
which pertain to getting this information removed off my record?
I know odf the regular(what they tell the public) ways ...
like requesting forgiveness, however, I really don't think that would work.

Thank you for chatting with Kaplan University. Your feedback is important to us. Once you close this window, please take a moment to fill out our survey and tell us how we did today.
Like many others, I am also a victim of Kaplan University for student loan debt. If there is a class action lawsuit please contact me.
