I was a former tenant at apartment complex, Camelot at Federal Hill in Perth Amboy, NJ for almost three years. My lease was up in September 2013, however, I needed to vacate the apartment a month early and move out of state. Because I was aware that I would be leaving my apartment one month early before the end of my lease, I still paid the September 2013 rent so that no debts would be owed. Despite paying the rent for the remainder of my lease, I received a letter in the mail at the end of September from Camelot of Federal Hill and billed a breaking lease fee. After speaking with the manager who then confirmed that my September 2013 rent payment was received and I should not have been billed for both September 2013 rent and a breaking lease fee, Camelot at Federal Hill returned my security deposit in the mail by check and informed me that my account balance was now up to date and nothing was owed. However in November of 2013, I received a letter from a debt collections who was contacted by Camelot at Federal Hill to collect the same $494.32 amount which had already been resolved and determined that I do not owe. After numerous attempts to explain that the situation has been resolved to the debt agency the debt collections agency still claimed that I owed Camelot money and continued to threaten to report me to the credit bureaus for an outstanding balance that was reported to them by Camelot. As a result, I paid the $500 so that my credit would not suffer. I contacted Camelot, sent them all the appropriate documentation so that I would get a refund back but it's been months and I haven't heard from them since. It's also extremely hard to get through to the apartment manager Aracelly even though I've called her at two different locations. What kind of place reports you to a debt collections for money that you ALREADY PAID?? I work hard and $500 is a lot to see go down the drain for absolutely nothing. This is completely unethical.
