Attempting to evade payment of income taxes is not only irresponsible and un-American, it is also a federal crime -- a felony punishable by up to five years in prison per 26 U.S.C. ยง 7201. According to documents filed with the Maricopa County Recorder's Office, Mr. Brewington failed to pay nearly $34,000 in income takes in 2006, 2007, and 2008, which resulted in the IRS filing a lien against his assets. As of late 2012, there is no indication that this debt has been paid. Could Mr. Brewington may be potentially facing serious federal criminal charges? It gets even worse -- John Brewington is already a convicted felon, so depending on the number of separate charges, another conviction could be his second, third, or fourth strike.
Mr. Brewington's financial problems are not limited to just the IRS. Rather, Brewington was also recently sued for failing to pay his Citibank credit card bill of nearly $14,000. Brewington failed to appear in court resulting in a default judgment against him for close to $15,000 -- and this amount carries interest of at least 10% per year.
