I offered up for sale on Craig's List around 500 bales of hay for sale at a super cheap January price of $2 a bale for quality hay. I got lots of calls because it was a great price but decided to sell them to the sweet old lady who can't say no to a poor horse.
Her husband Gary and farm hand came out, agreed to buy all the hay and being a trusting person I said just go ahead and load them up, give me a count when you are done and we'll square up in the end. It took a couple of months, with many small load trips for them to get it all. We converse a few times about them coming out or how many they took and this passive aggressive thief has the gall to consistently mention how "loose" the bales are when she should have been thrilled I cut her an honest deal but no. Her farm man also left some huge ruts along my drive and didn't mention or apologize for it but whatever.
They finally wrap up and it comes time to pay and I get every excuse in the world. Not only does she not pay but completely lies about how much hay she took. I told her I didn't know how many bales I had, to see if I could trust her going forward, but I have an exact count. Those little counters on the bailers work pretty good you know. I've offered to even allow her to make payments, at least show me she wants to pay something and she promises again to send money but another month goes by with nothing, so I call her again and guess what, she cancels her phone number.
You try to do something nice, deal fairly with people, trust people and people like this remind you why so many people are so cynical and mistrusting these days.
