I was hired by a drug company to do a print ad using my likeness in pictures that would be used to promote their product. As a favor to my cousin (who uses Ingrid French Management), I agreed to let them "represent" me.
Per the drug company's agreement, I was due to be paid (via my agent), a net sum of money for my work. The drug company stated in writing that they would pay any Agency Fees (20%) directly to the agent and that I was not to be charged out of the monies due me.
Again, as a favor to my cousin, and since this wasn't going to cost me anything, I agreed to list Ingrid French as my Manager. After the shoot, and waiting the requisit 90 days for my money, I received a check from Ingrid French Management for my fees, less an additional 20%.
I immediately phoned Ingrid and explained that she obviously made a mistake and that she owed me the additional 20%. She told me that she was entitled to the 20% because she represented me.
I explained to her that it clearly stated that the drug company was paying her the 20% directly and that it wasn't supposed to come out my proceeds. She had the audacity to say to me that not only does the drug company have to pay, but that I also had to.
I explained that that was a breach of all of the rules by which all talent and management companies work and that in addition, she didn't actually represent me, since I had already been hired prior to my "hiring" her as my representative.
She replied to me very curtly by saying that she has the money and that there is nothing I can do about it. She further stated that if I want, that I could sue her. She then hung up the phone in my face.
Beware of using these unscrupulous, unethical people. They are what give agents and managers a bad name.
