I had a cold call representative knock on my door 1 year ago representing IDT ENERGY and what a savings these "energy providers" save you as opposed to direct billing through ConEd. This was in the summer of 2014. Now March 2015 and I recieved my electric bill and it was $580.00. I was in shock since I had been on vacation.
I called ConEd for an explaination and I was told it was for 2 months since we (living in New York) had a series of bad snow days making it immpracical to come out and read the meters. I reviews my bills for the last year and I, on average, pay $60.00 a month in the winter and $120.00 in the summer since I leave my AC on full time. I explained to ConEd my findings and documentation based on my last 12 months of bills. I was informed IDT Energy billed and on top of that increased billing supply 20% more in addition. I never got a letter, e-mail or anything stating this. The supervisor at ConEd offered to scedule someone to come out and read the meter again to verify the watts used vs billing. He also stated it was showing I was paying 65% more on average with them vs ConEd.
NOTE: I am single and live alone in a 1 bedroom apartment. I ask about dis-enrolling with IDT Energy and he told me I had the right if that was my choise. I ask for the number to disenroll and he gave it to me. It's been 3 weeks now and I have called every single day dozens of time to both the CS number and the corporate office and every single time they just pick up the phone and hung up without saying anything. Now the phones are shut down so you can't call without getting a recording saying, "our phones are temporarily down, please call back the next business day." Having never heard of energy providers, and I get it's a sales pitch, and hundres of people fall prey to it, since just moving to NY from Los Angeles. So thats my bad for being ignorant about this.
I called to Cape Verde, and the line kept on ringing for a while, but no one picked up. I tried to call again and it said that I run out of my minutes. I called customer services, they said that they registered the called as a call actually made, I told them that the call was not completed because no one picked up, they did not believe me and told me that they registered the call, and that no one waits that long in line, that I should have known that there was a problem, I asked to talk to the supervisor and they turned my call down three times. They are obviously trained in ripping off people.
