A/C unit was making noise so I called for them to have a look. The tech didn't even do a thing--said that from the noise I described I need a whole new unit to the tune of between 7 and 8 thousand dollars. A repair would only be a band aid but would cost between 1 and 2 thousand. Called an independent contractor who used some equipment to monitor all the functions and he said he could find NOTHING wrong at this time--and if it happens again to call him but he didn't want me to waste the $700 it would take to replace the likely part as long as it's working. Big difference in a repair estimate---these are thieves in my book.
I recently moved into an over 55 community and needed a plumber to hook up a water line to my refrigerator. I had seen numerous commercials on TV for Horizon services. I had also noticed their trucks in our neighborhood servicing our neighbors so I chose them.
The technician arrived promptly and was courteous. He spent some time filling out paperwork. He said prices were fixed and he used a code book to arrive at our final bill. To install a water line and a valve was to be $902. But if I bought there service plan for $99. I could save 15%. I remarked that this seemed high. He installed the line in about 20 minutes. Again I noted that the prices seemed high for such a job. He proceeded to auger our toilet for $99. I then asked if he found Horizon Services to have competitive prices. He said they were a little hire but had many warranties.
The next day I called them to review my bill since I still believed something was amiss. I was told a manager would call mI within 24 hours. Meanwhile I called plumbers in the area and researched costs for this installation. No one quoted us more than $200. At that point I overnighted a document they had given me which would break the service contract. The next day the manager contacted me after receivingthis notice. He said he never got a message to call. He listened to my concerns and offered me a discount that would make it approximately $500. I said I'd get back. The price Horizon charged was over 400% higher than average. Even the discounted charge was over 250% higher. When I returned his call, the manager was away from his desk and I left a message that this offer was still way out of the ball park.don't have contacted my credit card company to see if this can be resolved.
The only other phone call we had was from the customer service manager. My husband posted tchain charges with the Better Business Bureau.
I am concerned for my neighbors who are older and might not think to get competive estimates. The TV advertising is indeed inviting and as stated they are friendly and come dressed in a uniform and wear booties but nothing warrants these prices. Buyer beware. I hope this report saves at least one person fromshaving to go through this.
Had Horizon Services last year for a heater/furnace cleaning. The cleaning came with a fee and a free follow up cleaning the following year (this year). Scheduled my free cleaining and company tech arrived on time. Turned on my thermostadt to get the heater running (this is in summer) and he had a look. Tech came up less than 5 min later saying the flame sensor was not reading the pilot light and thus not lighting the burners. He went to his truck to look for a part and price to fix. Part would be $850 but he didn't have one and would have to order it. I told him to write up what was wrong and I'd think about it.
As tech was writing up the specifics in the truck, I googled the price of the part online ($21.49) and he came in to try and talk me into scheduling either the repair or the installation of a completely new system for between $7500 - $9000! Again, told him I'd think about it.
As he was talking to me, I notice the house getting warmer and warmer. Here, the heat was pouring out of all the vents.........clearly the heater worked. Either tech is unqualified to work on HVAC or the gimmick of free cleanings is just to "find something wrong" and try and talk people into getting work done or into getting new units. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
I will make this as simple as possible. The day after Christmas 2013 our plumbing in the house was backing up in our basement so we called Horizon Services because their radio and TV ads guarantee immediate service and they were the most affordable in the area, $129.00 with a 1 year warranty. Well Horizon Services must have a different perception of the words "immediate service" because they didn't show up until December 28th. They snaked the main from the curb which seemed to do the trick until December 30th in which the plumbing was backing up again in our basement.
We called Horizon right away because we have the 1 year warranty and surprisingly they came out the same day. We had the same tech and again he snaked the main from the curb and again it did the trick until that evening in which the plumbing was backing up into the basement again. At this point my husband and I are beyond frustrated. While the tech was here earlier that day he had scheduled for another tech to come out with a camera for the next day, December 31st.
Tuesday December 31st, 2013 the tech with the camera comes out and explains to us that he spoke with the other tech who has been to our home twice and they both have come to the conclusion it was our "trap" and it needs to be replaced. My husband and I have no clue what he is talking about as we know nothing about plumbing. The tech goes on to tell us how this complex procedure will be done and how Horizon Services will need to dig up a portion of my neighbor's driveway. He continues to tell us that this service will cost us $5084.00 and he has one slot open for Thursday and what credit card will we be using? He also said that if it wasn't the trap that Horizon would replace the main drain and we would only pay the difference from what we already paid to replace the trap.
After we told him we don't have $5000.00 he called the main office to try and have me financed and i'm so thankful my application was declined. Anyway after my declined application he packs up his paperwork, never putting a camera in the drain which is why he was there in the first place, and proceeds to leave. I said to the tech that we can't be left high and dry like this, we can't use our water and raw sewage is going to get into our basement and he said there was nothing he could do at this point unless we come up with the $5084.00. I left the room, went into my bedroom, slammed the door and cried.
The camera tech left and my husband got on the phone to a plumber friend of his father who after hearing my husband's story went out of his way and got someone to our house within a couple of hours. The two techs from this small plumbing company worked long and hard on this cold New Years Eve afternoon. They snaked the main from the curb just like Horizon Services but with a little more time and alot more effort and manged to push through two big clogs.
Apparently Horizon didn't go in far enough with their snake. On Friday January 5th the two techs from the small plumbing company stopped by to pick up their payment for services and to make sure things were running smoothly. Today is January 11th and we haven't had any water in the basement so far thanks to the small plumbing company that didn't leave us high and dry or broke.
As a service to the public and in particular the elderly, I would like to report a gross fraudulent business practice of Horizon Services, Inc. For the sake of the general good, the elderly should not do business with Horizon Services. Inc. The unconscionable practices that Horizon Services, Inc has perpetrated with us include but are not limited to the following: price gouging the elderly, taking advantage of the elderly under duress, and committing outright fraud on their sales contracts. These are but three of the despicable actions you need to know about Horizon Services, Inc. Add to this their poor workmanship, non-conformity to township ordinances, gross negligence bordering on criminal negligence in regards to their workmanship, you have enough reasons to avoid this vendor like the plague.
Here are the specific details on my experience: My 90 year old grandmother called Horizon to request an estimate on installing a gas furnace. On September 25th, 2013, Doug Daily (Sales Representative for Horizon Services, Inc) met with my grandmother. Doug Daily proceeded to list all the reasons why the house needed a new furnace and how the chimney in its current state could cause carbon monoxide to leak into the house. He scared my grandmother into believing that she needed to order a new furnace immediately. His original quote was $10,500 dollars for a new gas furnace and removal of existing oil tank in basement. Yes you read that correctly- OVER TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS to replace the furnace, which is twice as much as other companies in the industry charge. He told her he would give her a ""1500 dollar discount"" if she agreed to buy the furnace immediately and have it installed the next day. When she stated that she wanted to think about it, he told her he could only give her the discount that same day and that she would no longer qualify for a discount the next day. Then he stated that in order to get the discount she needed to choose next day delivery. As a result of choosing next day delivery, he explained, we needed to sign a document waiving the consumer’s ""three day right to cancel"". I examined the contract closely today. The contract clearly states that ""State law requires that this waiver must be in the consumer's handwriting. It must be signed and dated and must describe the situation requiring immediate remedy.” Doug Daily committed fraudulent misrepresentation on this sales contract by not only writing on it but also writing a bogus reason as to why the install needed to be completed on the next day. He wrote that the situation requiring immediate remedy was due to ""Emergency Heat"". Meanwhile, we are currently experiencing 80 degree weather outside and are certainly not in an ""emergency heat"" situation. In short, Doug Daily bamboozled my grandmother into waiving the right to cancel under false pretenses and scared her into thinking she was in an emergency situation. The sales contract is null and void due to his fraudulent claim and also because the contract states that only the consumer's handwriting is allowed on the contract. My grandmother did have a right to cancel since the contract was fraudulent. Doug Daily also promised my grandmother that Horizon would hook up my gas dryer, yet he did not send a licensed plumber to do the job and instead had 3 young men who had no experience in hooking up this appliance fend for themselves as they tried to figure it out. My gas dryer is now poorly installed with 25 feet of vent hose going across my basement, connected to plastic, venting outside 25 feet away from the dryer itself. They could have chosen a 5 foot path to the nearest exterior wall but instead performed a faulty install. I have had three different professionals in the industry look at what was installed by Horizon and the price Horizon charged my grandmother. They noted that the workmanship was faulty: the vents have holes where air is escaping, holes in mortar have not been sealed properly, and Horizon did a poor job of hooking up the gas dryer. Every single professional in the industry was shocked and appalled by the price my grandmother paid. My 90 year old grandmother was bullied and scared into thinking she had to immediately replace the heater at an astronomical cost to avoid putting her family in danger of carbon monoxide poisoning and possible combustion from the chimney, so she wrote a check in the amount of 9,133.00 to Horizon on 9/25/13. I am demanding a full refund of 9,133.00 in the form of a check made out to my grandmother and the removal of Horizon's installed items. Horizon's elder abuse, price gouging, misrepresentation of facts and their fraudulent sales practices and scare tactics forced my grandmother to waive her right to cancel under false pretenses. She deserves a complete refund and we deserve to have the faulty workmanship removed from our property. If they do not refund my grandmother the full price of$ 9,133 dollars, I will continue my process of seeking recourse with small claims court, the state's Attorney General, the BBB, reporting their fraudulent practices on every consumer awareness website imaginable, and alerting the Area Agencies on Aging of Horizon's elder abuse.
