I found an ad on Puppy Find listing puppies for sale from Hoover Acres in Indiana, and knowing there are lots of puppy mills in that state, I called and also email Lori Hoover several times to be sure I wasn't going to buy from one.

I must admit her ad on Puppy Find was well written, the puppies were registered with AKC and up to date on their shots so I figured they were most likely coming from a good home and AKC is supposed to inspect breeders that register their puppies with them. When we spoke on the phone Lori said she was a 'co breeder' of the dogs which made me a little nervous so I asked her what color the parents were, and right then and there I should have known there was a problem because she had to shuffle through some papers to give me the answer meaning she either handles lots of other dogs or has no interaction with the actual dogs she's selling, but I made a mistake and adopted one anyways.

On the day of pickup when we started getting closer to her house I noticed we were driving farther and farther into Amish/Mennonite country and I don't have any problems with them BUT I do know that a lot of them operate puppy mills and work with "english" people to sell their puppies for them which is exactly what Lori Hoover and "Hoover Acres" does.

When we got to Lori's house there weren't any dogs there- no parents, no kennels, no paw prints in the yard, nothing but my puppy sitting in a crate in their living room and it was quite clear that Lori was just the seller and not the actual person raising the puppy. I was horrified but how could I leave him sitting there all alone knowing what he would be returned to.

After I asked a few questions we got down to the paperwork and I noticed an Amish persons name on the AKC papers and I was horrified that I had done all this work, come this far, only to find out that I was supporting a cause I was totally trying to avoid. I asked Lori how many breeds she raises and she named off two but I later looked her up on Puppy Find again and she had several others listed, all different ages, different breeds, all with the same ad I found my puppy under. I got even more upset when I looked up the name of the Amish person listed as the breeder online and found him to be in trouble with the USDA for animal care violations and under the spot light of many animal rescue groups labeling him as a puppy mill, doing under cover work showing the disgusting conditions the puppies are raised in.

My puppy was fine at pickup, he was friendly and looked to be healthy but little did I know that I would be dealing with long term problems with Giarrdia. He has been on several types of medication since I have had him and Giardia is really, really hard to get rid of so I have to take weekly stool samples to the vet, clean and disinfect everything like the plague has entered my house and continue to spend mass amounts of money on trying to get him healthy.

I am extremely disappointed that the actual breeder of these puppies hasn't been put out of business and also extremely disappointed that Lori Hoover and "Hoover Acres" thinks that it's morally OK to tell people you are a co-breeder when you are actually just a third party marketing puppies to try and cover up where they actually came from.

If you are considering adopting a puppy please make sure you do lots and lots of research on the breeder before you adopt from them because there are lots of wonderful breeders out there but of course the bad ones really try to hide themselves well. If someone tells you they are a 'co breeder' and the puppy is registered be sure and get the name of the person listed as the breeder on their papers and do research on them first before putting down a deposit. If I had asked that one question before I put down a deposit on my puppy I would have instantly known what type of sick and disgusting environment he was really raised in.
