In June a woman came to clean. She ws given verbal and written instructions of where to clean. She rushed through my family/kitchen area which I wanted clean. She was next down the hall doing the bathroom, which I did not want done. I let her go and finish it. The next thing I know she has gone into my master bedroom, which had the double doors closed as my pets were in there. She was cleaning the shower in the master bath. I did not want this area cleaned as I have many valuables. Because she was knee deep in the shower, I let her go. She did not do a thorough job. Now I know why. When I was looking for a pair of earrings that can be reached from my personal walk-in closet door, I couldn't find them. I have been obsessed with trying to find them.
I am disabled and do not dress up much to go out. When I was looking for another recent purchase of turquoise earrings, I couldn't locate them, either. I began searching and discovered to pair of carnelian earrings also in a sterling silver setting were missing. Also a distinctive 14K white gold and 14 K yellow gold bracelet with cuts to reflect light and look glitzy was missing. These items were no doubt taken before I entered the room to discover her in the shower. I was a lead custodian for a public school system for over 20 years. Two things this cleaner had in common with very bad employees. They don't follow verbal or written instructions and they wander into areas where they should not be working. So many past employees who had these characteristics were also thieves.
As one must catch them in the act in order to accuse them of theft, all I was ever able to do was reprimand them for not following instructions. So, now that I am disabled, looking for someone reliable to clean my family/kitchen and front room only. I find I was very wronged by a person who does not know me. I can only suppose that she felt I was 'rich', because I live in a comfortable home and can afford someone to come in and clean. Suppositions can often be wrong. I worked myself very hard until I could no longer walk long distances due to my post-polio syndrome. Now, I find that Homejoy is no longer accepting appointments. I am out some very special jewelry. The two sets of carnelian earrings are irreplaceable.
I can always try to replace my recent purchase of the Native made turquoise earrings set in sterling. My favorite but not so common purple stone earrings that go with so many outfits and were often commented on are now gone to a thief who will never appreciate them. Homejoy has done me a big dis-service and are not as good as defunct. They will probably open up another a new name, so buyer beware and do not let them out of your sight.
Warning! Do not use Homejoy.com to clean your home. It is a scam! It is billed as an easy way to book over the Internet and have your place cleaned at a low price. However, they charge by the hour and milk the cleaning to get more money out of you. I bought a voucher for a free cleaning. The cleaner arrived (without her own vacuum cleaner, by the way) for what should have been a 2 hour job maximum. I have a 1,000 sq ft apartment that does not get very dirty. (My previous cleaner, who quit after having a baby, did a fine job in an hour or less.) The Homejoy cleaner stayed and "cleaned" for 5 hours! I did not realize that my voucher was only for 2 1/2 hours (my bad- lesson learned) and that I would have to pay for the hours in excess of 2 1/2. My place wasn't even as clean as when my old cleaner did it in an hour. When I called to complain, I was told: "I'm not sure what you want us to do. The time was provided to you." So yes, the hourly rate is cheap, but you pay for it in the end.
