I answered an ad on craigslist for some sort of specialist. It guarunteed a minimum of 2600 dollars a month minimum. It was a company that was "branching out" and was looking for 17 full-time employees. When I went to my interview, there was about 10-12 other people there. We were given somewhat of an idea what we would be doing. But no details. With a guarunteed minimum of 2600 monthly, I definitely wanted to give it a try. The trainer told us that we would have to work hard, which I had no problem with. I love getting my hours. He then pulled us into a room one-by-one to conduct personal interviews. Those of us that were selected were given a card and asked to call back that night between 5 and 5:30. I called back and was instructed to show up the next morning with a notebook.
Basically all that took place during the first day of training was the trainer bragging about how rich he was. It lasted about 5 hours and we didnt get paid for it. The following few days we all returned for training, again, lasting 4-6 hours and not getting paid for it. We were told that we were to be "independant contractors," and that we had to use our own vehicles. Day after day trainees started not showing up, probably because they were smart enough to realize what was going on, but I stuck it out in hopes for the large paycheck and the commission. We were not told the price of what we were selling until the last day of training. Im assuming because it would scare everybody off. We were going to be selling a 36
00 dollar air filtration system. Two air filtering Defenders, and one Majestic surface cleaner. The products were great, I'll admit, but extremely overpriced. Over the weekend we were asked to do practice demonstrations on 10 of our friends and family as PRACTICE. We were told that we had to contact our boss and the beginning of every demo, and at the end when we were going over prices. At the end, although it was only supposed to be for "practice," I was immensely pressured into selling the system to my friends and family. But I figured it was just supposed to be realistic.
The pay system worked like this: you reach thirty demos and you get paid 1000 dollars. You are supposed to reach at least 30 in two weeks, but there simply weren't enough demos for everyone to have thirty. My hours were inconsistent and frustrating. Some days I would wait around all day for a text message for 1. And other days I worked 12-16 hour shifts. I spent at LEAST 10-15 dollars in gas daily, and was only paid 10 dollars per demo. As the days went on my manager became more and more sketchy. I could tell he was dishonest and manipulative. He would say things like "Don't you want your family to be healthy? Why would you try less hard to sell to your own family than to complete strangers? Do you care about them more?," "If you go into a house and they tell you they cant afford it, theyre lying to you. Your customers are lying to you. Don't let them do that." "I don't give a fuck about people. I want the money out of their pocket. It's business"
He began slowly teaches us dirty sales tactics. "Don't let them read the paperwork" "if they ask about the interest tell them that you will ask at the end of the demonstration, by the time you've reached the end they will have forgotton." "Use their phone to call so that they can't kick you out."
The way he talked disgusted me. I went to peoples houses that had tape on the windows, holes in the ceilings, were on dialasis. You name it. When one lady became so frustrated with him at the end of one of my closes that she got on the phone, yelled at him, and hung up... he called back. NOT to apologize, but to continue to try and get this woman to purchase the system. I couldnt believe it.
I learned that when you sold a 3500 dollar system, you only got the 300 in commission if they had A-line credit. Anything less would be taken out of your commission. I also learned that if anything was discounted whatsoever, it was taken out of your commission as well.
As the days went on he became verbally abusive. At the end of one of my sales, the people were very interested. I called my boss to let him know that they wanted to buy it. Everytime the customer would talk to me he told me to ignore them. He became angry when I didn't repeat his stupid jokes to the customer, which just made it awkward and artificial. He screamed at me over the phone "SHUT THE F*** UP. OH MY F****** GOD IM TRYING TO MAKE YOU F****** MONEY. SHUT UP" He would tell me to say remarks to them that made them feel stupid, which I didn't. WHICH MADE HIM FURIOUS.
Now, for a guy that "doesnt give a f*** about anyone" he sure wanted "me" to have that money, right? He showed concern for my paycheck over the phone by screaming at me.
It wasn't about me, it was about him and his pathetic desperate business.
I confronted him about it that night when I returned to the office. I told him that people could hear him and He told me to turn down the phone. I couldn't believe it. He wanted me to turn down the phone every single time I closed a sale JUST SO HE COULD SCREAM AND CUSS AT ME AND TELL ME HOW STUPID I WAS. while at the office he answered the phone to talk with another employee.. whoops.. I mean "independant contractor" and he told this employee that he sounded like a little b**** and that its his fault that he wasn't selling a nearly 4000 dollar set to poor people because of his shitty negative attitude.
The people could hear him screaming and were absolutely appauled. There was another manager from another local office that would answer the phone occasionaly whom I had never met, but would still have to talk to sometimes to close or begin a sale. He was also very aggressive and MEAN. I had a woman take her phone from me and tell him that she had no money and to stop bothering her. She then gave the phone back to me and I said "hello." He was angry that I "let her have the phone." I replied that it wasn't my phone, and he hung up on me.
I did the math, and with the hours I was working, including the training, I could be making just about the same amount if it were at an hourly, minimum wage job. Except with this one, you don't get paid until you reach your goal. So I wasted a ton of money, wear and tear on my car, and time working for $40.00. yep. thats it. $40 dollars in over two weeks.
This job is a scam. All of the things people described when they worked for health-mor happened to me too. I wish I would have researched it before they screwed me.
DON'T work for HEALTH-MOR. If it sounds too good to be true, it IS. They have went out of business in the area before and their turnover rate is unbelievable. They do this on purpose so that no one ever reaches their 30 client goal and they quite. So they never have to pay them. SCAM SCAM SCAM.
