I usually ask my accountant to prepare my annual income taxes, but because she was busy doing my business taxes and to save time waiting for her, I decided to go to H&R Block. I also had several deductions and wanted to make sure a professional handled everything. When I made my appointment, I asked the receptionist what the approximate cost was for a single filing (usually a 1040); she quoted me around $50. That seemed reasonable to me, and even though I had deductions, I knew there may be an additional fee but nothing close to what they ended up charging me.
After I met with the tax preparer, Stephanie, (which I question has any expertise since she kept leaving to ask a senior preparer questions on the deductions form), the final bill was almost $400! And because I didn't want to pay for their fees up front, they charged me an additional $35. I was shocked, and frankly felt tricked into them doing the work upfront, and then telling me the price for their services afterwards. The total ended up being approximately 20% of my tax return!
After leaving, still dumfounded by the high fees, I decided to return and confront the manager and request an itemization of all the charges. Well, the manager was too busy (which I understand; it is tax season), so an associate preparer ( I think) shows up and tells me that they don't provide itemizations of charges; all charges are determined by corporate. Really? You have no idea what you are charging people for your services?? I asked about the $50 I was quoted, and then told by her that the price is for 1040EZ forms, not the 1040 form that my preparer used; and the price jumps up to $150! I feel conned and taken advantage of. I told my preparer, Stephanie, the receptionist and the second preparer that they charge more than my accountant!
People, please, please, please do not give your money to these people. They are thieves, and will take advantage of you. Educate yourselves, and please take the time to find an accountant outside of publicly-traded, franchised businesses like H&R Block. I requested that the owner of this location (who lives in Oak Harbor - at least that is what I was told) contact me, but that person never did. So much for customer service. I also asked the preparer I talked to after I returned if I had an option NOT to pay the high fee when Stephanie was done; she told me 'Yes'.
REMEMBER THIS: WHEN YOUR TAXES ARE DONE, AND YOU DON'T LIKE THE FEE THEY CHARGE, SIMPLY GET UP AND WALK OUT. I will never go back to any H&R Block. They are predators and will take advantage of you.
I went to the office of h and r block on feb 3 2015 to do my taxes the lady that did my taxes barely spoke english but she did tell me i was going to get back 3.120 dollars with in 21 days here it is 03-01-2015 and i ahve nothing then every time i call the refund amount gets smaller and smaller they are a big rip off they took almost 400.00 dollars from me to do almost nothing and on top of that the mailing date for my refund seems to change every day i call them do not trust them and i hope no body does business with them they are just a big rip off scam
I had ordered some magazines online in March 2014 for my son for a 6 month subscription . That company kept my information and reused it in August . I disputed the charges at the Mag.com site and they put my money back and H & R Block suggested I turn the card in as a compromised card . I did that . I made an appointment and went to their office to give them the compomised card and get a replacement .
Three weeks later , after the card was deactivated and cancelled , they allowed the card to be used and allowed charges of 122.66 be taken out on a pending hold . Friday Aug 29 . I called them and they said they could " release " my money back to me in 72 holds to call back on Sunday .
I called Sunday morning at 9 AM as per their instruction , they told me opppsss sorry we let the vendor have the money ... they then told me to call back on Sept 2 and speak to the " dispute " center , I did . They said they would get my money back and if it was not back in my account by Sept 9 , to call them . I did but they had me record a message and they would call me within 48 hours . No calls were ever returned to me .
Today is Sept 11 and they said to begin with there was no dispute opened ... I got a bit over the top with my attitude and they finally found the dispute . Then they tell me I have to PROVE that I didn't owe the vendor the 122.66 , now .
I explained it was all verbal and the amount owed was 38.00 . I was basically told that I will not get my money back , especially since I couldn't prove I didn't owe the vendor 122.66 .
I closed the account and requested the remaining amount of my money be sent to me in a check .
H&R Block is a scam company, they prey on the poor with early tax return loans that have an outragous interest rate and they pay tax pro's only about $3 an hour because they make them take all training unpaid. A typical first year tax pro takes a 60 hour course (unpaid of course) then is required to take much training after that only to be paid minimum wage to prepare returns. Since most only work part time and receive no coaching or guidance they will end up quitting after a short time having made zip for their trouble. This is the most F'd up A.H. business I could possibly imagine!!! They should be shut down by the Govt.
I was offered by the representative when I called to have a FREE review done of my current and previous three years of tax returns. At the scheduled appointment the FREE review was confirmed and I was told it would be completed in a couple of days. After repeated calls and broken promises for a month! I was then called and told the manager wanted to charge me for the review and I told the agent that I do not want them to review my returns and I will just come and pick up my documents. I was then told she wanted to talk to her manager and just complete one year's review for free since that is what I was promised and would call me back. Messages were left and a week later I was told that one year’s taxes were reviewed and there was a charge! and that NO documents were leaving this office without the fee paid! I went to the office and was told my documents were not going to be released without signing a document stating they completed a review of my taxes. I told them I did not want their review and would not sign the document. The manager (Jill Hass) came up front insisting on the signing and I had to threaten requesting the police to come over in order to get my documents!

I insence was given a invalid visa card which is no good to me at this point and can not be used I was ripped off... and i cant get a hold of H&R block.
