Our dealings with Green Thumb Landscapes (GTL) and Mr. Hank Sickerman constitute the worst home improvement experience we have ever had. The project was a straight forward demolition of old brick steps and foundation, replacement with a new foundation and installation of custom cut granite steps. One half of the total cost was paid up front.
After the second day of work, Mr. Sickerman submitted a bill for a 20% cost overrun due, it appears, to factors he did not anticipate when he bid the project and wrote the contract. However, the foundation constructed on the second day turned out to be misaligned and at an incorrect elevation. Due to the faulty work (which Mr. Sickerman admitted to), cost overrun and damage to our property due to use of poorly maintained heavy equipment, we suggested, and ultimately prepared, an amendment to the contract. At this point Mr. Sickerman became hostile and combative in his email correspondence.
He refused to amend the contract and would not detail how he would proceed. For these and a number of other reasons, we found GTL to be in breach of contract and stopped all work. Throughout the process Mr. Sickerman accused us (in various terms) of operating in bad faith. He misstated what the contract contained, even though he wrote it. All attempts to reach an out of court settlement with Mr. Sickerman/GTL to end the project have failed. We will have to hire someone else to remove the misaligned foundation, reconstruct a new foundation, repair the damage to our lawn and have the demolition debris removed.
We are out a significant amount of money. We fully expect Mr. Sickerman to respond with an unsubstantiated rant regarding this review, including statements about weather delays. He may try to shift the blame to us, just as he did during the project. However, we found that the problems with the project were not weather related but were due to a lack of understanding (or remembering) of what was in the contract, poor communication, a lack of planning, a lack of oversight, poor execution, improperly maintained heavy equipment, and other factors. However he responds, we have substantial documentation to support our description of how Mr. Sickerman/GTL conducted this project. Overall, for us this has been a home improvement nightmare.
We had MANY problems with this company. Lie after lie and they destroyed our property. After we fired Hank Sickerman, our $3500+ outdoor lighting disappeared that his company had installed 6 months ago or so. Hank has a bad temper! In my opinion, I would stay FAR AWAY from Hank and GreenThumb Landescapes, Inc.
