Gold's Gym Reviews

  • Jan 7, 2015

In 2010 I quit Gold's gym by sending them a certified letter from my doctor. To them I was cancelled and was refunded from down payment. However, the kept taking money out and I had to stop payment on them. They were no help on the phone and sent me to collections. This Century credit collection agency in on my credit report and feel angry that I can not do anything about it. I need help. This is unfair and hurtful to me.

Gold's Gym was notified in writing on 7-14-2014 giving 30 day's notice to cancel gym membership. Was contacted on 7-18-2014 by Gold's Operations Manager Shannon Cole and was advised to contact their agent, ABC Financial to provide such notification. ABC Financial was contacted and advised that cancellation notifications cannot be made over the phone and have to be made by US Mail. Followed up with Shannon Cole and advised that due to international travel we were unable to respond by mail in a timely manner. She was asked to process the cancellation for us. Had no reply from Gold’s or ABC and assumed it was properly handled.

On 9-5-2014, an unauthorized debit was observed dated 8-22-2014. Shannon Cole, the club General Manager Ronnie, as well as ABC was immediately contacted. ABC indicated that they did not process a cancellation request in July as instructed, but then took the cancellation via phone contrary to what they communicated in July. They have however failed to honor the cancellation as of 7-14-2014, despite being provided copies of the written cancellation.

Received three mailings from ABC dated 9-16-2014, 9-22-2014, and 10-12-2014 with regards to a balance of $12.82 due for a September 2014 charge. During the same time frame, multiple phone messages were received from ABC. On 10-13-2014 a call was returned to ABC. They were informed that they had received written notification of dispute of any owed amounts previously. I had not received any written response nor documentation showing a valid contract.

They were also clearly notified to cease and desist in any further calls or attempts to collect the debt in compliance with the FCRA until they provided a copy of a written contract for the time period in question.

Since that time, there have been three (3) blatant violations of the FCRA by contacting me after they were notified to cease and desist as of 10-28-2014.

On 11-13-2014 I again received a phone call from ABC regarding the account, again in flagrant violation of the FCRA and the notice that was given to them on 10-13-2014.

On 11-14-2014, I received a billing from ABC Financial, this time listing additional amounts totaling $73.52 that are not valid. Currently I am responding via US Mail, but have no confidence in receiving a reply since my other correspondence dating all the way back to 7-2014 has been largely ignored.

I don't get it. I'm a long-time customer. I had a complaint. They have, at the local level and at the executive level, totally ignored me. How companies, that are so oblivious to what is important, stay in business is beyond me!

Beware! I'd like to inform you of the unethical and deceptive business practices going on at the Gold’s Gym located in Corpus Christi, TX. Based on the reaction from the manager of the gym, they may already be aware and possibly condone these behaviors.

In June 2014, I foolishly purchased a Groupon deal that seemed enticing. The deal was for three-month membership at the Gold’s Gym for $69. I went into Gold’s Gym to redeem my voucher and was helped by (now former) employee Eljie Grino. He signed me up for my three-month membership and then proceeded to inform me that there was a current promotion that would allow continuity of my membership at the end of the Groupon. This “promotion” was based on the Groupon and was only available upon initial sign up after I indicated I wanted to think about it. He told me the membership fees would only be $21.64 per month after taxes, not biweekly. I asked several times to clarify because I knew that Gold’s has biweekly dues (the main reason I never had a membership before). After assuring me on several occasions that the monthly fee was only $21.64 after taxes, I agreed and proceeded to sign the electronic pad. I was unable to see exactly what I was signing. The whole process took less than 10 minutes and Eljie wasn’t even going to provide me with a copy of the contact until I asked him for a copy. He emailed me the copy and I went about my business and did my workout at the gym.

The Groupon Promotion expired at the end of September and I soon began to see charges from Gold’s Gym beginning on 10/3/14 for $21.64. I wasn’t surprised until I again saw another charge for the same amount on two week later. On Friday, October 17th, I called and spoke with Gold’s manager, Mark Jackson, who was not helpful at all. He indicated that he needed to speak with his boss and would return my call on the following Monday, October 20. Needless to say, I haven’t heard from him. The common response I’ve received from everyone at the gym is basically, “Oh well, he lied but you are still stuck in this contract.” I indicated that I wasn’t trying to get out of my contract, but instead pay the amount I initially agreed upon. From my understanding after speaking with an employee about this, actions like this are the reason that employee is no longer employed there, however, the manager would not confirm this.

In hindsight, the contract that was emailed to me was not viewed until I began to get charged. I had already paid for the three month Groupon and since I wasn’t being charged yet, reviewing the contract slipped my mind.

At this point, the bank card to which Gold’s gym is linked, has issued me a new card to replace the soon expiring old one. My dues can no longer be taken without the current information. However, the dilemma remains, should I stop paying dues and have the folks at Gold’s Gym ruin my excellent credit score? Or should I give Gold’s Gym my new information so that the deceptive business practices can continue to thrive?

Look out for a class action lawsuit, if not by me, then someone who is also fed up with the incessant thievery by Gold’s Texas Holdings Group, Inc.

This is a version of the letter I sent via certified mail to Gold's Gym Corporate about a week ago. Today, I received an email from Corporate Employee Cheka Clyde which simply stated, "Here is a copy of the contract you signed" and proceeded to obnoxiously circle my signature in the attached document.

Terrible, awful customer service.

***Pay attention to the reviews. Do not sign a contract with Gold's Gym!*

My wife joined Gold's Gym Arcadia approximately a year ago during their grand opening special promotion period. Towards the end of her contract, my mother became ill and my wife was unable to continue to use the gym facilities due to her caretaking duties. My wife paid for the remainder of her contract and asked to terminate membership.

Fast forward 3 months later, we get notified that we owe 3 month member dues and that her contract was not cancelled. The manager, Marco, who handled her last transaction was transferred to another location and claimed to "not remember" what occurred. My wife has not used her membership for the period they are asking (because it was cancelled!) but they are still demanding payment.

The operations manager, Denny Wen, said there was nothing he could do for us and to fill out the form online to speak with corporate. He said that Marco should have given us a termination form but failed to do so, and it was basically our word against his with corporate.

Bad business practice!!! Prospective members beware!!!!

I signed a one year contract with Fitness First in Dec, 2012. My contract obligation has been fulfilled and I have been paying month-to-month membership. In 2013, Fitness First was acquired by Gold's Gym International. I received a letter from Gold's Gym stating that they will honor all contract terms for now-former Fitness First members. Now I want to cancel my membership, and reviewed the copy of my contract. It simply states, a 30-day notice is required to cancel. Nothing else.

When I inquired about cancellation at my gym, I am nicely informed to visit Gold's Gym's website to give a written notice. AND they require 30 days to cease payment authorization. THEN they will process my 30-day notice. WHAT?!? They can change a credit card information in a day or two when you owe them money. Why would they need 30 days to cease payment authorization?!? On top of that, since I paid for the last month when I joined, I would still have to pay next month's due and they will keep my last month pay.

The last page on the website says ""I understand that by submitting the online cancellation request and checking the authorization box below, I am providing formal notification of my desire to cancel my membership per the 30 day cancellation requirement and the terms of the membership agreement. I understand that I will be billed a full month's dues for my final payment(s) per the terms of the agreement.
